Module 3: Roles and Responsibilities

Estimated time

Time iconAbout 10-14 minutes.

This is Module 3 of Learning About Taxes. In this module, you will learn about:

  • the responsibilities of the CRA and taxpayers;
  • the rights of the taxpayer;
  • what a taxpayer can do if there is a disagreement about an audit or assessment;
  • how the CRA handles disagreements and similar objections from taxpayers;
  • the Taxpayer Relief Provisions; and
  • the underground economy and criminal investigations.

Paul and Anya were talking on the phone a few nights later. Once again, the subject of taxes came up.

"I don't understand why you think you have to file a tax return," said Anya. "Shouldn't the government figure things out for you?"

"I don't think so," Paul answered. "They told me that I should fill in the tax return and send it in if I want to get any money back. Besides, I can get help if I need it."

"So what happens after you file the tax return?" asked Anya. "Well, I guess they check my tax return to make sure I filled it in correctly. Then I think I will get some money back," replied Paul.

"What if you don't agree with whatever changes they made on your tax return?" Anya asked.

"Then I guess I can tell them that I don't agree with them," responded Paul.

"I guess so, but you should find out if you can do that, just in case," said Anya.
