Module 2: Tax-Filing Process

You can find most forms, publications, and information on the CRA Web site (as Paul did). You can also get more information or ask for publications by telephone. CRA staff are available and trained to answer tax-related questions.

The CRA's main Web site has:

  • general information, forms, and publications that are accessible by topic and by client group;
  • the CRA's office addresses and telephone numbers;
  • a secure electronic service, My Account, which lets you change your address online, view some of your personalized information such as your identification, your refund or balance owing, your instalment account, your registered retirement savings plan information, your Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) amount, your GST/HST credit, and file an objection on line; and
  • links to other government departments.

You can also go to the CRA's electronic services site from the main CRA Web site to access services like:

  • NETFILE which allows you to send your tax return directly to the CRA using the Internet;
  • electronic payment options for tax-related payments; and
  • online requests for a change to or review of tax returns.

The Tax Information Phone Service (T.I.P.S.) is another service provided by the CRA to help you find general or personal tax information. Services are accessible by telephone at 1-800-267-6999, including support for enquiries on:

  • the status of personal income tax refunds;
  • your eligibility for a GST/HST credit Glossary Term and payment dates; and
  • eligibility for CCTB and payment dates.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program also helps individuals in person. Under this program, the CRA trains volunteers to help eligible individuals More information on eligible individuals with simple tax situations complete their income tax and benefit return. The service is free of charge.

This successful program has been in place since 1971, and it helps thousands of people across Canada each year.

The CRA also provides teletypewriter support, operator-assisted services (for telephone enquiries), and in-person sign language to those who need it.
