Before you file

You can use Internet file transfer to file original and amended information returns. All you need is a Web browser to connect to the Internet and software that will create, print, and save your electronic information return.

You can file multiple returns within a single submission (maximum 610 kb).

  • Have your paperwork and other documentation ready.
  • Note the file location of your electronic information return.
  • Have your Business Number or Account Number, and your Web Access Code handy.

    Note
If you do not have your Web Access Code, call our Help Desk at 1-877-322-7849.

Computer requirements

If you meet the following computer requirements, you should have no trouble filing your return.

  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (with Service Pack 6a), Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional (with Service Pack 1), or Windows 2000 Professional (with Service Pack 3)
  • Pentium 166 MHz or higher
  • 64 MB system RAM or higher
  • 200 MB of available disk space on your hard drive
  • 128-bit Web browser
  • 28,800-baud modem or faster

What if you have a balance due?

If you have a balance owing, you can still file your information return electronically. However, we can assess a penalty of 10% to 20% of the amount you failed to remit when:

  • you withhold the amounts but do not remit them; or
  • we receive the amounts you withheld past the due date.

For information about penalties, see Failure to remit or call 1-800-959-5525.

Remit any balance owing separate from your electronic filing. Send the payment to any tax centre with a letter that indicates the tax year for which the payment applies, the amount covering your outstanding balance, and your Business Number. If you choose to pay electronically and you have Internet or telephone banking, you may wish to ask your financial institution if you can make an electronic payment. See e-payment for more information.
