Censor This! is a feature documentary written and produced by Bruce Edwards, Ann MacKeigan and Susanne Reber. This hour long program takes a sonic tour around the world from the street bazaars of Istanbul to the townships of South Africa. From the conflict zones of Beirut and Rwanda to the North American popular music of the 20th century. Using the strength of the music and powerful narratives the documentary exploes the duality which allows music to be at once frightening and seductive to those in power positions. This one-hour special will air February 22nd on CBC Radio One at 8pm. It will rebraodcast on CBC Radio Two on March 3rd to mark an international day of musical freedom of expression.
The Censor This! team includes CBC News Foreign Correspondents, reporters and music producers from across the CBC Network.
CBC News Foreign Correspondent, Jennifer Westaway reports on how Iranian singers based in Los Angeles are influencing the music scene in Tehran. Our Asia correspondent Michael Mcauliffe reports the censorship of popular singers in Bali.
Dispatches presents a special edition with reports on the “Colombianization” of Mexico and from the Mid East.
The Current presents multiple documentaries throughout the week.
World This Weekend David McKie reports on the killing of writer journalist Tara Singh Hayer - a murder that remains unsolved to this day.
Other Highlights:
Quirks and Quarks - February 24th - Censorship in science is a very big issue right now in the US, and it affects us all. Among the issues surrounding censorship in science are: censoring of speech by US government agencies; removing scientists from government panels; limiting or denying funding to scientists; rejecting scientific conclusions; revising or rewriting scientific reports; making ideological appointments to scientific agencies and advisory groups; and self-censorship by scientists afraid of losing funding or being targeted by religious groups.
Writers & Company - February 18th
- In this special presentation, host Eleanor Wachtel speaks with two
writers who know only too painfully the power of the word. From the
Congo, Pierre Mujomba felt the repressive hand of the Mobutu regime;
after one of his plays came too close to the truth, he was forced to
seek asylum abroad.
Novelist Shahriar Mondanipour, from Iran, recalls his time serving in
the Iran-Iraq war, and the ongoing harassment he experienced as a result
of his literary and political activities. Two distinctive writers with
compelling stories-both now living in exile-reflect on what it means
to be denied a voice.
In Performance Radio 2 - concerts of the music of Dmitri Shostakovich who fell out of favour with the Soviet regime, Artists of the Royal Conservatory of Music performing works suppressed in Nazi Germany, exiled Iranian vocalist Parissa with the Dastan Ensemble in concert and Zimbabwe's Oliver Mtukudzi and Vusi Mahlasela from South Africa in concert.
