The Genealogical Institute of the Maritimes, a non-profit organization, was established in 1983 under the auspices of the Council of Maritime Premiers. The Institute arose in response to a felt need noted by leading genealogists, genealogical societies of the Maritime provinces, and archivists, for certification and registration of persons undertaking genealogical research for the public.

The Institute has, in addition, an educational role in upgrading the quality of professional family history research in the Maritimes. Members of the Institute strive for excellence in research and encourage others to do the same. Through lectures and articles published in journals, newsletters, and the press, an endeavor is made to raise the profile of professional genealogical research methods and techniques.
