Infant falls from 2nd-storey window

Last Updated: Monday, August 9, 2010 | 6:11 PM CST

A Winnipeg toddler who fell two storeys from a window Monday is being held overnight in hospital for observation.

The 17-month-old fell after a window screen gave way at a home on Mountain Avenue in the North End, police said.

Emergency crews rushed the infant to hospital in unstable condition, but doctors soon upgraded the child's condition to stable. The child is being held for observation as a precaution.

Not long after the tot fell, the city issued an advisory reminding parents to be cautious about their kids playing near windows.

"Reports of incidents like these increase in the summer months when people open their windows for fresh air," said Marc Proulx, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service's public education coordinator.

Proulx said children aged one to four are typically most susceptible to falls from windows as they do not understand the risks of leaning against an open window or a screen.

The city said it recommended caregivers install devices to prevent windows from opening more than 10 centimetres and not assume that window screens are sturdy enough to keep a child from falling through.
