Few violinists at age 25 can touch Andrew Wan's meteoric career path. Currently co-concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, he's also a very busy soloist and chamber player. He visits Tempo this morning while in Ottawa to play concerts. And we'll hear the recent recording the MSO made of Beethoven's Fifth symphony.

Tempo tips the hat to music education with some special Music Monday programming. Julie welcomes the Cantiamo Girls Choir of Ottawa to sing the Music Monday theme song live on Tempo. Also starting Monday May 4, Tempo presents the young artists from "Next!" putting the spotlight on some of Canada's best up and coming musical talent. The series begins with the remarkable 14 year old Calgary pianist Jan Lisiecki who will play works by Chopin.

Today on Tempo, Andrew Craig is in the host's chair, and Julie Nesrallah is back with her mezzo soprano hat on. She'll perform Scottish songs by Beethoven, accompanied by the Gryphon Trio, from a concert recorded earlier this year. Julie's hosting duties resume on Monday.

Wednesday April 29: Guest host Katherine Duncan brings you Tempo from Calgary today. She'll be presenting Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, "the Emperor" played by pianist Helene Grimaud and the Staatskapelle Dresden Orchestra. Later on the Tempo Live portion of the program, hear a live concert recording from Manitoba. Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian joins the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra conducted by Alain Trudel.

Guest host Katherine Duncan brings you Tempo from Calgary today. Currently host of "In Tune" on CBC Radio 2, Katherine is a familiar voice to long-time Radio 2 listeners. She'll be presenting Brahms Symphony No. 2, with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Marek Janowski conducting. And the grand, sweeping melodies of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 are on deck for the afternoon.

Today is the final installment of the Tempo Temptation, Chef Edition. Julie's final guest is Chef John Taylor, owner and chef of Domus Cafe in Ottawa's Byward Market, just a short jaunt from the CBC Ottawa Broadcast Centre. Chef John Taylor was inspired by the 'Aquarium' from the 'Carnival of the Animals' by Camille Saint-Saens to create this recipe for Smoked Ontario White Fish Chowder

Today's Tempo Temptation features a creation by Chef Jean Texier of the Toronto restaurant Batifole. Chef Jean's creation, inspired by the "Empress of the Pagodas" movment from Ravel's Ma Mere l'Oye is for Saffron Butter Poached Lobster.

Batifole is in a middle of a table d'hote promotion for the charity STOP FOR FOOD so will feature this dish as of Friday March 27.

Chef Jean writes: I am not a musician; my only instrument is the "piano" (cook nickname for the kitchen stove) but it seems to me that playing written music is a little like cooking from a recipe. It can a lot of fun as you can add your own touch of interpretation. But for me the real pleasure comes from the freedom of the improvisation.
