Arctic reindeer

Reindeer outside Inuvik are the northernmost herd in Canada.

The animals were driven to the region by the Canadian government in the 1930s.

Today the animals are managed by Kunnik Limited, which hires herders to protect the animals from arctic wolves and wolverines.

On a cold day in January, Northwind’s associate producer, Philippe Morin, travelled past Jimmy lakes to visit the herds.

He there spoke with herder Raymond Ettagiak about the reindeer, and how they are reacting to an unusually cold winter.
