About the show

Maamuitaau is a documentary series that brings the stories of the James Bay Crees to life. In English, Maamuitaau means "Let's Get Together,” which reflects the spirit of the show. The series covers a broad range of topics including social & political issues, environmental conflict, and traditional subjects like hunting and crafts. Observational, engaging, and at times poetic, the series transports you to the Great North and to the heart of the Land’s People.

About the Team

The Maamuitaau team researches, plans and crafts the series based out of Montreal. The series is shot in and around the nine communities in the James Bay Region that make up the Cree Nation. The team includes host Benjamin Masty, producer Abhish S. Birla, production assistant Diane Icebound and editor Robert Choma. The team also works closely with the CBC North’s Cree Radio Unit, which also works out of Montreal.

Benjamin Masty, Host

Benjamin MastyBenjamin was raised in Whapmagoostui (Great Whale), Quebec. He grew to appreciate his Cree roots and traditonal way of life as his family would spend a considerable amount of time living off the land. A true hunter at heart, Ben shot his first Ptarmigan at 7 years of age with a .410 shotgun and his first Caribou at 12 years of age with a .30-30 rifle.

He was elected Youth Chief for Whapmagoostui at 18 and was in office for two terms. It was then that his passion for television and film drew him South. Ben joined Maamuitaau as an intern while still at college and rapidly rose to become a journalist and then host in 2009.
