Winnipeg support centre gets boost

Last Updated: Thursday, August 19, 2010 | 2:14 PM CST

A Winnipeg facility for immigrant and refugee women who face homelessness is expanding with the help of money from all three levels of government.

The federal, provincial and civic governments announced $830,000 Thursday for the Neighbours centre at the Holy Names House of Peace.

St. Boniface MP Shelly Glover said the renovations will allow Holy Names House of Peace to provide eight more transitional housing units for women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Once finished, the centre will be able to house up to 17 women. Currently, the facility can support six women.

At the announcement, Afghan immigrant Mojgan Heidari explained how the facility was there for her after going through a traumatic experience.

"I was completely lost and finding myself in the middle of nowhere," said Heidari. "I had no hope left. It was the support of the House of Peace that made all the difference."

The money to expand the centre is being delivered through the Winnipeg Housing and Homelessness Initiative.
