Canadian manufacturing sales inch higher

Last Updated: Tuesday, August 17, 2010 | 12:03 PM ET

Canada's manufacturing sales edged up 0.1 per cent in June to $44.8 billion, the 11th increase since manufacturing sales bottomed out 13 months earlier.

Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that constant-dollar manufacturing sales rose 0.7 per cent to $41.7 billion in June, 15.3 per cent higher than the lowest recession level in May 2009.

Sales gains were reported in nine of 21 industries, representing 50.1 per cent of total sales.

The increases were largely offset by declines in the remaining 12 industries.

Sales rose 4.8 per cent in the paper industry, mostly due to higher sales volumes.

Other industries reporting gains in June included furniture (up 6.4 per cent), fabricated metal products (2.0 per cent) and chemical manufacturing (1.2 per cent).

Sales declined 2.1 per cent in the food industry and 1.5 per cent in the petroleum and coal products industry.

Sales were up in four provinces, with Manitoba recording a 4.8 per cent sales gain, while sales dropped 0.2 per cent in both Ontario and Quebec.
