About Champions of Change

Canada's Champions of Change is a contest the whole country wins. CBC News and Outpost Magazine have joined forces to produce this unique program celebrating volunteerism in Canada.

Whether your champion is coaching a local hockey team or building a school thousands of miles away, you can nominate any Canadian volunteer doing their part to make the world a better place. Volunteers make an invaluable contribution to society, serving our community at home and helping our neighbours abroad.

The person you nominate as an exceptional volunteer must have done some or all of their volunteering on or after July 1, 2009.  And, ideally they've done something extraordinary in this time period.

To nominate click here and follow the steps to submit a volunteer you know. Simply decide whether your nominee fits into the national section for volunteering at home or the international section for volunteering abroad. Then pick one of the five categories. You can only enter your volunteer in one category so read the descriptions carefully and decide where your nominee would fit best:

EDUCATION, COMMUNITY & CULTURE
Volunteering to Foster Growth in People and Communities

ENVIRONMENT
Volunteering for Mother Earth

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Volunteering for Health Promotion, Disease Prevention, Personal & Communal Well-Being

HOUSING & INFRASTRUCTURE
Volunteering to Build and Innovate

SOCIAL JUSTICE
Volunteering to Empower

The top ten finalists will be selected by an independent panel of judges of community and volunteer leaders. Frank O'Dea, a co-founder of Second Cup and international philanthropist.

Then you the Canadian public, will get to vote on which two finalists (one domestic and one international) from the top ten will be chosen as the two winners of Canada's Champions of Change.

Both winners will receive $ 25 000 for the charitable organization of their choice. Click here to read more about prizing.

The winners will be revealed on CBC TV News in January 2011, the 10th anniversary of the International Year of the Volunteer.
