Welcome to the TD
Summer Reading Club 2005
This year's TD Summer Reading Club (SRC) is being offered in eleven provinces and territories across the country through the support of TD Bank Group. The program was created by the Toronto Public Library in 1994. Beginning in Toronto, the program expanded across Ontario in 2001 and is now widely available across Canada under the auspices of Library and Archives Canada.
The TD SRC promotes the fun of reading to young Canadians and encourages them to visit their library during the summer months. The program has a simple, recreational and creative approach that offers children a structured reading environment and rewards their personal achievements. The program fosters the development of the reading habit and helps students retain what they have learned in school.
The theme for 2005 is space exploration and is entitled Blast Off! It was chosen for its universal appeal to children. The fabulous graphics used on the poster and stickers were created by renowned illustrator Ange Zhang.
Led by the Toronto Public Library, a team of children's librarians in the public libraries of Toronto, Ottawa, and Montréal developed the program's material. The material is of high quality: bilingual, free and versatile, which makes it adaptable to a wide and diverse range of libraries and communities.
The reading kit, which will be available in early May, includes a poster, stickers and a logbook. In addition this year, collector cards featuring Canadian astronauts and scientific fact sheets are provided by the Canadian Space Agency.
The program also offers an online staff manual that includes suggestions for running a successful reading club, forms, clip art, booklists, and templates for activities. Additional materials will be posted as they become available.
In June, TD Bank will promote the program to raise the awareness of parents and children of the importance of reading and its impact on literacy.
