Celebrate Summer Program The beautiful, newly renovated Northern District branch of the Toronto Public Library was transformed into an amazing beach scene with sun umbrellas, inflatable rafts, beach balls, pails and shovels for the exciting launch of the 2011 program. Twenty six Grade 6 students from St. Monica Catholic School were in attendance, along with special guests from CNIB's own summer reading club program. The children were invited to draw their own beach scene by the program artist, Kim LaFave, who led them in a drawing lesson. All received a Splash! t-shirt featuring this year's artwork along with a gift bag that included a poster, activity booklet, stickers and water goggles. Guests at the launch included:
Also at the launch, TD Bank announced a multi-year, $3.7-million renewed investment to the program to help Toronto Public Library, Library and Archives Canada and CNIB run the TD Summer Reading Club through to 2014. As Canada's largest reading club, more than half a million children participate each year, reading more than two million books in both English and French every summer. City Librarian Jane Pyper said, "This donation over 3 years is quite generous, and we are delighted with the increase of TD Bank Financial Group's commitment to the program. I am honoured to thank you on behalf of all of us at Toronto Public Library for your continued support of literacy and the joy of reading. This commitment will allow us to have more programming to reach more children, expand our outreach efforts, and further develop our interactive website for the next 3 years." "The TD Summer Reading Club is a great way to keep young minds stimulated over the summer months," said Frank McKenna, TD Bank Group deputy chair and literacy champion. "We are proud to help kids discover the joy of reading this summer and make a splash using their imaginations."
