TD Summer Reading Club E-Newsletter

Volume 1. Number 10. October 2009

In this issue:

Title for the 2010 Program

July's newsletter reported the winning Jungle theme. This newsletter introduces "Destination Jungle" as the title of the 2010 TD Summer Reading Club program. This fits our bilingual program perfectly and will be used for both the English and French posters. Thanks to the Francophone Committee for the suggestion!

Illustrator Stéphane Jorisch

To illustrate the "Destination Jungle" program will be the creative, colourful art of the very talented Stéphane Jorisch. Many will be familiar with his award winning books, Suki's Kimono, The Owl and the Pussycat and Jabberwocky. Other picture books that he has illustrated include Anancy and the Haunted House, Emily's Piano, The Trial of the Stone, Rosie and Buttercup and Lulu's Pajamas. Not only an illustrator of books for young people, Stéphane Jorisch also illustrates for magazines and has created designs for the renowned Cirque du Soleil. Our illustrator was born in Brussels and grew up in Lachine, Quebec. Currently he lives in Montreal with his family.

Kids National Web Site Statistics

This year's superlative Kids National Web Site was a resounding success as indicated by the number of visits. There were 15,348 visits in English and 2,336 in French for a total of 17,684. This was an increase from the 15,825 total visits in 2008.

An astounding 41,285 books were read in English and French. Book reviews submitted in both languages totalled 156.

The most popular pages in both languages were the games page followed by the interactive content — the Mystery of the Week and Name Agent 009. In French the next most popular pages were the websites, while in English it was the Booklists.

The number of visitors to read the reviews from the kids was high and demonstrates how interested kids are in other kids' recommendations.

There was evidence that some libraries were centering some of their weekly activities around the website content.
