Theme for 2011 – Splash! Celebrate Summer

Summer is celebrated every year in Canada but next summer it will be extra special because the theme for our 2011 TD Summer Reading Club will be Splash! Celebrate Summer which received 79 of your votes out of a total of 218. A very close second choice was Be a Star with 76 votes and Treasure/Adventure was also favoured with 63 votes.

Thanks to all for taking the time to vote and for the enthusiasm shown for the three choices.

Agent 009 reveals the winners of the TD Summer Reading Club Library Awards!

On Saturday June 5th at the closing ceremonies of the Canadian Library Association's 2010 conference in Edmonton, Alberta, the winners of the 2009 TD Summer Reading Club Library Awards were announced. Alan Convery, Manager of Community Relations of TD Bank Group and Jean-Stéphen Piché, Assistant Deputy Minister, Library and Archives Canada were on hand to present the Awards to the winners.

  • First place in the English division is Chelsea Public Library, Chelsea, Québec.
  • Second place winner is West Lorne and Rodney Libraries, Elgin, Ontario.
  • First place in the francophone division is Bibliothèque L'Octogone de Lasalle, Ville Lasalle, Québec.
  • Second place goes to Bibliothèque Lamartine de St-Eugène, Islet, Québec.

First place libraries receive $5,000 to put toward their children's library program as well as transportation and hotel accommodations to attend the Awards ceremony at the CLA annual conference. Second place winners each receive $2,000 to put toward their children's library program.

Libraries that achieved a nomination of Special Mention are:

  • Bibliothèque Léo-Pol-Morin, Cap-St-Ignace, QC
  • Bibliothèque Municipale Saul-Bellow, Lachine, QC
  • Bibliothèque Publique de la Municipalité de Nation, St. Isidore, ON
  • Carleton Place Public Library, Carleton Place, ON
  • Glen Abbey Branch, Oakville Public Library, Oakville, ON
  • Springfield Library, Springfield, ON
  • Thompson Public Library, Thompson, MB
  • Wainfleet Township Public Library, Wainfleet, ON
  • Wapiti Branch, Reid Thompson Public Library, Humboldt, SK

Reminder to libraries: Apply for the TD Summer Reading Club Library Awards for Destination Jungle. Deadline for submission is November 15th, 2010.

Destination Jungle Launch in Edmonton, Alberta

Stanley A. Milner Library in downtown Edmonton hosted this year's program launch. As part of the official launch, renowned children's book illustrator and Governor General Award recipient Stéphane Jorisch who designed this year's artwork was onsite doing illustrations with grade 2 and 3 students from St. Catherine Elementary School. The children loved the personalized drawing lesson of jungle animals. Check out the pictures of the launch on the wiki!
