Program

The TD Summer Reading Club can help keep your children busy and happy while encouraging them to enjoy reading. Designed for children 12 and under, the Club is designed to be stimulating, motivating and fun. Since each age group has its own interests, Club activities are developed and organized to reflect the needs and wishes of each group.

The Club is promoted by means of an invitation given to individual children through their local library, school or day care centre. The invitation sets the tone by announcing the theme for the summer, using the special colours for the year, and showing the first illustration by the featured artist. An invitation is not required in order to register.

After the children are registered, they are given an incentive in the form of a reading kit designed by librarians and children's book illustrators. Also on registration, children each set themselves a goal for the summer, choosing the number of books they would like to read on their own, or have read to them, during their vacation.

On average, Club members read nine books per summer per child. Using the stickers provided in the kit, your children can track their progress by attaching the stickers to the poster in the spaces provided. With the help of library staff, children can each design their own selection of books they will enjoy reading. Once they have read nine books and attached the corresponding stickers to their poster, they will discover a completely transformed poster. And, at the end of the summer, the librarian will give them each a reading certificate, certifying that they have reached their goal.

And that's not all! Your children can benefit from a wide range of play activities led by library staff and their partners. There's something for everyone: stories, nursery rhymes, songs, quizzes, celebrations, treasure hunts, crafts and contests. Really cool interactive games are available on the Club's Internet site.
