About Social Tagging

Social tagging (also known as "folksonomic tagging" or "social bookmarking") is a Web-based collaborative tool that enables visitors to:

  • save favourite websites in a centralized and personalized online space;
  • use their own terminology to catalogue and classify websites;
  • discover and share relevant Web content with fellow social taggers.

What is a tag?

A tag is a keyword or a term you can assign to a bookmarked website as a means of classification.

How does social tagging work?

  1. You first need to create a personal account for a social tagging tool (see "Where can I find social tagging tools?" below for information on free online social tagging tools).
  2. When you see something on the Web that interests you, you can use your designated social tagging tool to automatically add the site to your personal library.
  3. You can assign as many tags to the linked sites as you like, and rename, delete, add or merge tags. Since your personal library is stored on the Web, you have access to it from any computer with an Internet connection.
  4. You can also discover the links of visitors whose personal tags and classifications are similar to yours. Visitors can share their collection of links with other designated visitors.

Where can I find social tagging tools?

There are many different types of social tagging tools available on the Web. Here are some free social tagging services for storing, sharing, and discovering online bookmarks:
