Creating Jobs and Benefitting Science – Government of Canada Invests in Upgrading Federal Laboratories in Gatineau

Gatineau, Quebec – The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Pontiac, today announced $3 million in funding, over the next two years, to modernize two key facilities in Gatineau.
Modernizing federal laboratories is one of many job-creating investments in the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The funding is part of a $250-million commitment to upgrade laboratories across the country.
"This program is addressing important maintenance issues at this facility and will quickly bring economic stimulus to this region," said Mr. Cannon, who announced this funding on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable James Moore. "This funding will provide jobs for workers ranging from replacing air conditioning and electrical systems to installing better humidity control systems. With this funding, our scientists and researchers will have healthier and more modern work environments, enhancing research and development that benefits Canadians."
"Modernizing our laboratories will allow us to improve digital access and enhance the preservation of important Canadian documentary heritage," said Daniel J. Caron, Librarian and Archivist of Canada.
The two facilities receiving funding are the Library and Archives Canada Preservation Centre and Place de la Cité. The Preservation Centre is a state-of-the-art facility that provides an optimum storage environment and advanced laboratories for Canada's documentary heritage collection. Place de la Cité houses the archival acquisition functions of Library and Archives Canada, including the processing of archival records which involves arranging, selecting, describing, and cataloguing records for access.
The modernization of these two buildings will allow Library and Archives Canada to remain at the forefront of digital imaging to support web-based access and the treatment of e-based digital records.
