Directed by Jody Shapiro, a Canadian filmmaker who has produced over 20 films, How To Start Your Own Country is a documentary about the often unrecognized, usually maligned and, for all appearances, kind of crazy leaders of micro-nations. The micro-nations shown in this film are countries within a country established by disgruntled citizens who wish to be kings or presidents. The film may seem to be about a political issue - what is a country? - but the it is equally about philosophy and psychology. What makes an area of land independent from the land that surrounds it? And what makes an individual need that independence from their fellow people?
