3/13/14: The Cardinals took a page from the Atlanta Braves' book by signing infielder Matt Carpenter to a six year, $52 million extension. Last season was Carp's first full season and he developed into one of the best offensive players in the National League. Overall, Carp posted a 6.6 Wins Above Replacement, which is pretty solid. But more importantly, he led the NL in hits (199), runs (126) and doubles (55). In comparing across history, only seven infielders have reached 125 runs, 50 doubles, and 190 hits and done more than him. And that list includes Lou Geherig, Alex Rodriguez, and Albert Pujols.
3/6/14: There are always bumps, bruises and questions at every spring training. Two big questions for the Cardinals this year are how the pitching rotation will shake out (since the Cards have a surplus of talented pitching) and how the outfield will look (since the Cards also have a surplus of talented outfielders). Flame thrower Trevor Rosenthal threw his pitches since experiencing tightness in his groin. The injury was never considered serious and he was only held out as a precaution. Phenom outfielder Oscar Tavares is pushing for time, but looks like he is not fully recovered from ankle surgery last year and may start the season in the minors.
2/27/14: The Cardinals may be without starting pitcher Jaime Garcia for an extended period again. Garcia reported arm pain at spring training and has been sent back to St. Louis for tests and treatment. When healthy, Garcia can be a dominant left handed pitcher. He showed that in his first two seasons as a pro. He missed most of last season and this setback does not look good for him or the team. Lucky for the Cardinals, they have a wealth of pitching talent including Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Trevor Rosenthal, Shelby Miller, and Michael Wacha. This injury hurts depth, but the Cards have shown they can live without Garcia if needed.
2/20/14: The Cardinals are looking to have starting pitcher Jaime Garcia return to action this spring training. Garcia seems healthy after missing most of last season with a major shoulder injury. Garcia's last two seasons have been cut short, which does cause some to question his durability. However, he has shown that he is a very talented young pitcher (just like all Cardinal pitchers). He also makes the rotation even better, and that rotation will include Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Michael Wacha, and Shelby Miller - that's pretty good, especially since each of those guys may be a number one pitcher if on another team.
2/13/14: There are a select few places in the world where the flagship franchise is more than just a sports team, it is close to a religion. You can find it with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the L.A. Lakers, the Green Bay Packers, and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Redbirds are coming off of a World Series loss. That is not good enough for this franchise, and they expect to be better in 2014. It is just about time for pitchers and catchers to report, and you can bet that this team, with this manager (Mike Matheny) is going at the season very hungry and ready to win their third World Series since 2006.
2/6/14: The Cardinals will enter spring training shortly with a problem. Actually, it is a good problem to have - they may have too much pitching depth, particularly in the rotation. Adam Wainwright is a lock. So too is Jaime Garcia and Shelby Miller. Michael Wacha seems to have earned his way in as well. But there are others in the mix, including some of the young arms last seen in the playoffs and World Series. Of course, there really is no such thing as too much pitching, as the Dodgers learned early last year when they started with nine potential guys in the rotation, but trades and injuries left them scrambling.
1/30/14: The Cardinals will enter the 2014 season as one of the favorites in the National League. The team deserves a lot of credit for successfully identifying, developing, and keeping talent in their farm system for several years - a tradition known as "The Cardinal Way". But sometimes there are holes, and shortstop is one of them. The team signed Johnny Peralta to a four year deal, and he wants to prove that his PED use was not the reason he got great. Outfielder Matt Holiday is ready to welcome him with open arms, and if Peralta plays well, so will Cardinal Nation.
1/23/14: Tim McCarver ain't dead - heck, he ain't even resting! McCarver and the Cardinals announced this past week that he would broadcast 30 Cardinal games in 2014. McCarver is now 72 years old and actually started his professional baseball career in 1959 (as a 17 year old) with the St. Louis Cardinals. He played there for 14 years. It is a nice 'full circle' for McCarver who retired at the end of last season. Cards fans will enjoy it too. McCarver has been a fan favorite in St. Louis for generations and it is nice that he will have the chance to finish his career in the same place that he started.
1/16/14: Of course the Cardinals were a great team in 2013. They had to be to win the ultra-competitive NL Central, have the most wins in the National League, and make it to the World Series. However, they may be even better in 2014. It starts with manager Mike Matheny, who now has two years experience and postseason success under his belt. He is out of LaRussa's shadow. It extends to the pitching staff that was young and untested last season - then excelled in the playoffs. And now that they have a legitimate shortstop, the sky is the limit for the Cardinals.
1/9/14: The Cardinals won the National League pennant fueled by outstanding pitching from several rookie flamethrowers. They were forced into action (and succeeded wildly) because of injuries or ineffectiveness of veterans. Two good veterans are on schedule to return next season. Starting pitcher Jaime Garcia is on track to be back by spring training and reliever Jason Motte will likely be back after the first couple of months. In short, a very good rotation and bullpen is looking to get stronger next season - and that is bad news for the rest of the National League and NL Central.
1/2/14: One year ago, in the same Sugar Bowl that the Crimson Tide will play in, the Florida Gators were completely whipped by the Louisville Cardinals. The Gators seemed sad that they were not in a bigger game and let their emotions beat them (giving rise to to a joke about how to make Gator Cookies - put them in a Sugar Bowl for three hours and whip them). Alabama could suffer the same fate except they have one of the best coaches in history leading them into the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma. No, it is not the Championship, but Alabama is a dynasty.
12/26/13: The Raphael Furcal era in St. Louis is officially over as he signed a one year deal with the Miami Marlins last week. He was not likely to return anyhow, as the Cardinals signed free agent Jhonny Peralta to play shortstop. But Cardinals fans will always hold a special place for Furcal, even if he was only in St. Louis for 2.5 years and missed all of last season with an elbow injury. Furcal came in the middle of the magical 2011 season and sparked the team with his solid play and positive attitude. The Cardinals won the World Series that season using Furcal's mantra of "Happy Flight".
12/19/13: Welcome to the club Mr. LaRussa and Mr. Torre. Along with former Braves Manager Bobby Cox, former Cardinals managers Tony LaRussa and Joe Torre were invited to join the Baseball Hall of Fame. LaRussa is the winningest manager in Cardinals history and led the team to three World Series appearances and two championships. Torre, before he bolstered his resume as manager of the Yankees, was an MVP for the Cardinals as well as manager prior to LaRussa. Torre took three terrible teams to respectable records, before the launch of the Cardinal Way. Congrats to all - well deserving.
12/12/13: The Cardinals officially said goodbye to outfield Carlos Beltran, as the slugger signed a three year deal with the New York Yankees. The Cardinals expected to lose Beltran, but tender him a qualifying offer for $14.1 million. That qualifying offer meant that anyone who signs Beltran would give up their first round pick. The Yankees already gave up their first rounder on another signing, so MLB will award the Cardinals a compensatory pick in the first round. By dumping salary on a player who is past his prime and picking up an extra first round pick in the process, St. Louis again showed why it is the best run team in the league.
12/5/13: The Cardinals made waves by signing shortstop Jhonny Peralta to a four year, $52 million contract. Peralta is 31 years old and served a 50 game suspension for his association with the Biogenisis scandal. Many feel that is rewarding cheating, but the Cardinals have some justification. They desperately needed a shortstop, which are in short supply this free agency period. The other option was to get into a bidding war for Steven Drew, but that would also cost the Cardinals their first round pick. The price tag may be high, but that is the market value right now.
11/28/13: The Cardinals made a major trade to bolster their roster by trading third baseman David Freese and set-up man Fernando Salas to the Anaheim Angels for outfielder Peter Bourjos and outfield prospect Randal Grichuk. Freese is a hometown guy who was the hero in the 2011 World Series. He slumped in 2013. That, combined with the emergence of first round draft pick Kolton Wong made him expendable. The Cards will probably move Matt Carpenter to third and Wong to second. Center fielder Jon Jay may be the odd man out in the outfield. In other news, Former Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter formally retired and may take a job in the front office.
11/21/13: The MVP votes are in, but the Cardinals somehow were left out. Many feel that Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina deserved the National League MVP. Molina had a great offensive year and has really developed as a hitter over the past decade. But it his work behind the plate that separates him apart from everyone else. He handles the pitching staff like a coach and rarely makes a mistake. Meanwhile, runners are scared to steal on him because his so good. Molina and Matt Carpenter split votes and finished third and fourth, respectively, in the voting, with the Pirates Andrew McCutchen winning the award.
11/14/13: To no one's surprise, the Cardinals gave outfielder Carlos Beltran a $14.1 million qualifying offer. Beltran will likely reject the offer and hit free agency where he will probably get a better offer. There are several teams interested in him, including the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. By placing the qualifying offer, the Cardinals guaranteed some compensation if Beltran signs elsewhere. At age 37, Beltran reportedly wants a four year deal, and his best bet may be in the American League where he can be a designated hitter and not strain his knees playing the field everyday.
11/7/13: There is no doubt that the two best teams in MLB played for the World Series, and that does not happen often. In the end, a lack of offense from the Cardinals and timely hitting from the Red Sox gave Boston the Championship four games to two. The Redbirds have nothing to be ashamed of and look to be in great shape for the future with outstanding young pitchers like Michael Wacha, Shelby Miller, Joe Kelly, and Trevor Rosenthal. Expect the Cards to continue to be competitive and possibly add to their National League record 11 World Series titles.
10/30/13: The Cardinals find themselves in a difficult spot, trailing the Boston Red Sox three games to two in the World Series and the series shifts back to Boston. The first four games of the series were defined by major mistakes, with the unprecedented "obstruction call" in Game 3. The Cardinals will send unflappable rookie Michael Wacha to the mound tonight to try to force a Game 7. Wacha has the opportunity to be the first rookie to win five games in the post-season. The Cards need to come out strong tonight, particularly their offense which has struggled all series.
10/24/13: The Cardinals are back in the World Series again - this marks the second time in three years and the fourth time in ten years. In those appearances, they lost to the Red Sox (2004) and beat the Tigers (2006) and the Rangers (2011). The Cardinals have proven that they did not need Albert Pujols to win. To get to the Series, the Cardinals had to get through the $250 million L.A. Dodgers. St. Louis went 3-1 against Dodger aces Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw. Even more impressive is that they relied heavily on rookie pitching that they drafted and developed - a stark contrast to the Dodgers who have bought almost all of their talent. Good luck in the World Series and bring home championship number 12 against the Boston Red Sox.
10/17/13: Despite having the best record in the National League and owning homefield advantage, the Cardinals were not favored in this series primarily due to pitching. While L.A. trotted out their high-priced aces for the first two games of the series, the Cardinals sent out a pair of rookies. The rookies, Joe Kelly and Michael Wacha, were up to the task and, combined with the bullpen, allowed only two runs in 22 innings. The Cards took a 2-0 lead to L.A. but lost Game 3 3-0. Hitting has been at a premium in the series and will likely continue to be so until someone wins four games.
10/10/13: The Cardinals are currently engaged in a great playoff series with the Pittsburgh Pirates - the team they edged out for the NL Central title. St. Louis dominated the first game in St. Louis then were blown out in Game two. The Pirates took Game 3 at PNC Park, but the Cards came back in Game 4. Rookie pitcher Michael Wacha took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the Cardinals won 2-1 to force the decisive Game 5 back in St. Louis. The Cardinals will put out ace Adam Wainwright who won Game 1 while the Pirates will use rookie Garrett Cole, who won Game 2. Winner faces the L.A. Dodgers in the NLCS.
10/3/13: The race for the NL Central is finally over and the St. Louis Cardinals came out on top. The best news of this is that the Cards go straight into the division round rather than burn a pitcher and possibly get eliminated from in a play-in game. St. Louis finished the season strong, taking two of three from the Nationals then sweeping the Cubs to secure their spot. St. Louis also sneaked into the best record in the entire National League, and will have home field advantage in NL playoffs. St. Louis plays the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Divisional Round.
9/26/13: The Cardinals, like the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates, have punched their ticket for the playoffs. St. Louis in the post season is as American as apple pie, and no National League team has more World Series titles than the Redbirds with 11. As many expected, the top three teams from the NL Central are all in the playoffs, but the order has yet to be determined. St. Louis has a magic number of 4 and a two game lead on the Reds and Pirates. The Cards hope that Allen Craig will be able to return from a foot injury in the postseason, but there is no official word that will happen yet.
9/12/13: The National League Central is quickly becoming a division race for the ages. Just a week after dropping two of three in Pittsburgh, followed by dropping three of four in Cincinnati, the Cardinals got home and promptly swept the Pirates. The three game domination put the Cards in first place by 1.5 games. The season does not get much easier, and the Reds appear to be playing their best ball of the year. St. Louis should have a spot in the playoffs, but the question is if it will be as a division champion or as a wild-card.
9/4/13: The Cardinals escaped from PNC Park in Pittsburgh with a win in the final game of the three game series. That win put them back into a tie with Pittsburgh for first place in the NL Central, with Cincinnati lurking just a few games back. However, it leaves them at 3-7 against the Pirates this year, meaning they will lose the season series even if they sweep the next series, which is this week in St. Louis. Newly minted starting pitcher Joe Kelly has been the Card's saving grace lately, pitching six strong innings and allowing only one run, as the Cardinals won the Sunday game 7-2.
8/29/13: The Cardinals slid after the All-Star break, losing their hold on the NL Central in process. As the season gets closer to the end, the Cardinals have rallied and tied the Pirates at the top of the division. MVP candidate catcher Yadier Molina is off the disabled list and hitting over .400 since his return. The NL Central is easily the most competitive division in baseball with St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati all in the mix. All three teams will likely make the postseason, but only the division champ will avoid a play-in game and risk going home early.
8/22/13: If there was any doubt that Cardinals' catcher Yadier Molina should be the National League MVP, then it should be gone now. Molina went on the 15 day DL. The Cardinals only won five games. They are back on track now that Yadi is in the line up and is handling the pitchers again. Molina is second in the NL in batting average this season, something no one could have expected even three years ago. But his greatest talent is calling the games from behind the plate. He knows every batter in the league, exploits their weaknesses, and keeps pitchers calm. There should be no other choice for MVP at the end of the year.
8/15/13: The Cardinals just finished up what may have been the toughest 15 game stretch that any team could endure this season. The team went on the road for a three game series against the AL East leading Atlanta Braves. Then they had five games against the NL Central leading Pittsburgh Pirates. Then a three game series against the Cincinnati Reds (all of those games on the road). They were welcomed back home with a four game stint against the NL West leading Dodgers. The Cards went a terrible 4-11 during the stretch, and now need to make up some ground to get a better position for the playoffs.
8/8/13: The Cardinals picked a terrible time to go into a slump. They embraced a slim lead in the NL Central over the Pittsburgh Pirates, then got swept in a three game series by the Atlanta Braves right before a five game series against the Pirates. They lost the first four games to Pittsburgh, including a double-header sweep. They did win the final game of the series 13-0, but left the Steel City 2.5 games behind the Pirates. Then they have to deal with Cincinnati. Yadier Molina is on the DL for two weeks, and it is obvious they need him back.
8/1/13: The Tigers earned their 16th commitment for the 2014 signing class with offensive lineman Sam Bailey. Bailey is from the southwestern area of the state and says he always wanted to play for the Tigers. No precise position has been decided for the 6'5, 225 pound lineman, but it will be on the offensive line. In other news, it looks like it is time for QB James Franklin to take the team on his shoulders. Franklin is a talented young QB, but struggled with the transition to the SEC last season. Here is hoping that he learns from the 2012 campaign and can put together a better performance this season.
7/25/13: The Cardinals got off on the right foot following the All-Star Break, beating visiting San Diego 9-6 in the opener of a three game series. The Redbirds had several representatives in the mid-summer classic, but used the time to give rookie pitcher Shelby Miller a few extra days off and let Matt Holiday rest his aching hamstring. Holiday was put on the DL retroactive to July 12 on Saturday. In the meantime, the Cardinals are leading the NL Central and the entire league at this point. They cannot get too complacent, though, both the Reds and Pirates are within striking distance.
7/18/13: The Cardinals enter the All-Star Break with not only the best record in the NL Central, but the best record in all of baseball at 57-36. They hold a one game lead over the pesky Pittsburgh Pirates and a five game lead over the favored Cincinnati Reds. Catcher Yadier Molina is a legitimate MVP candidate. His defensive prowess has always been well regarded, but he is better offensively than anyone thought - he leads the National League in batting average at this point. The Cards could use another bat and possibly a starting pitcher down the stretch, but they should make the playoffs again.
7/11/13: The Cardinals come from behind to beat the Miami Marlins last Saturday on the rare walk-off error. With John Jay on first, pinch batter lined a two out single to right field. Jay advanced to third, but RF Giancarlo Stanton gently lobbed the throw back to first baseman Logan Morrison. As Morris walked to pick up the ball, Jay raced home and ended the game 5-4 in favor of the Redbirds. The Cardinals became the last team to win in a walk-off manner this season, and it was not because of any of their five All-Stars, but rather the bench that came through.
7/4/13: After a stellar start to the season, the Cardinals have tailed off of late. The bats are not making contact like they had earlier and the steady conveyor belt of rookie pitchers seems to have gotten off track. The Pirates overtook first place in both the NL Central and all of Major League Baseball. St. Louis still is in second place (first wildcard), but the Reds are close behind as well. The Reds may find life tougher in the second half as they are getting a bit dinged up and the will finally play some consistently good competition for the next few months.
6/27/13: We are just shy of the all-star break and the Cardinals keep cruising. They have accomplished veterans like Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltran, and David Freese, but much of their pitching has been provided by rookies like Shelby Miller and Tyler Lyons. Molina, the best catcher in the game, should be the MVP. He is a genius behind the plate and has guided his young battery mates to great early success. He has never been known for offense (except the home run against the Mets in 2006 NLCS), but actually leads the national league in batting average. Yadi is doing it all this season and will surely go down in Cardinals lore with Stan Musial, Bob Gibson, and Ozzie Smith.
6/20/13: The Cardinals had hoped to stretch their NL Central lead by taking advantage of their easiest stretch of the season. This stretch included series against the New York Mets, the Miami Marlins, and Chicago Cubs. The team took two of three from the Mets, and Adam Wainwright became the game's first 10 game winner. However, they lost the series with the lowly Marlins - the first series lost since mid-April. The Redbirds have surprisingly struggled with the Cubs at home, and Wainwright actually lost to them. They will be OK in the long run, but they do need some veteran pitchers to return to keep the burden off of the rookies for a while.
6/13/13: The Cardinals further solidified their standing as the NL Central leader and the best team in baseball. The Redbirds visited the rival Reds for a crucial three game series over the weekend. St.Louis won two of three, and have not lost a series since the third week of April. This gave the Cardinals a four game cushion in the division. St. Louis was the first team to reach 40 wins and the last to reach 10 road losses. They continue their roadtrip with series against the lowly New York Mets, Miami Marlins, and Chicago Cubs. If the Cardinals can continue to roll, they should be able to stretch their lead over the next few weeks.
6/6/13: The Cardinals are maintaining their perch at the top of the league, and they are doing it with rookies and without home runs. With Jake Westbrook, Jaime Garcia, and now John Gast out, heralded draft pick Michael Wacha got his chance - and he was brilliant in his debut. He did not the win, as Mitchell Boggs imploded again in the rain-delayed game, but did show that he can compete. He was the compensatory pick from the Albert Pujols signing in 2011, and may be here to stay. Boggs was demoted back to AAA and his time with the Redbirds may be over. It is obvious that he is not a closer and has lost his confidence to hold games at this point.
5/30/13: The Cardinals keep winning despite a recent rash of injuries. They have lost starting pitcher Jaime Garcia and closer Jason Motte for the season. Ace Chris Carpenter is still out. Jake Westbrook is on the DL, as is his replacement John Gast. But the Redbirds keep calling up young talent and keep winning. St. Louis leads not only the NL Central, but the entire league through Memorial Day. And the competition is tough. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are 2 and 3 in the division, as well as 2 and 3 in all of MLB. The credit goes to the Cardinals farm system, which has to be considered the best in the league at this point.
5/23/13: The Cardinals have surged into the top of the National League in the past month, winning 12 of their last 14 games. As with any team on a prolonged surge, they seem unbeatable right now. Their starting pitching has been outstanding, but have lost both Jake Westbrook and Jaime Garcia to injury. Garcia may be done for the year, though Westbrook should be back in the next couple weeks. And don't forget Chris Carpenter. He is throwing well and is conditioning to return as a starter. Even if that does not work, the Redbirds have a lot of arms in the minors - another reason why they are competitive every year.
5/16/13: The Cardinals have put on an impressive display of late to seize the National League Central division lead by two games over the Cincinnati Reds. Particularly impressive is the starting rotation. Rookie Shelby Miller allowed a lead-off broken bat single to the Rockies, then proceeded to completely shut down the potent Colorado offense. He retired the next 27 batters in a row for a one hit complete game shutout. The next day, Adam Wainwright had his moment by pitching a two hit shutout. He retired his first 13 batters so the Rockies went 40 batters without a man on base.
5/9/13: A little more than a month into the season and the NL Central is not shaking out as expected so far. The Reds were supposed to run away with the division, leaving St. Louis, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh to battle over a possible wild card spot. But St. Louis has positioned themselves as the class of the division (again, it is early). The Cards are getting great starting pitching and winning series against division rivals. If the Redbirds have a weakness, it is the bullpen. Closer Jason Motte will have Tommy Johns surgery, Mitchell Boggs is now in AAA, and no one seems to want the position. Expect Mo to make a move.
5/2/13: The Cardinals are going to have to make a move here shortly. They are getting great starting pitching - even from Jake Westbrook. Their offensive has been serviceable (if not streaky), but they are having trouble closing games. Closer Jason Motte is likely out for the year. Fill in Mitchell Boggs is terrible in the ninth inning. Flamethrower Trevor Rosenthal seems like a good fit, but cannot seem to control the ball when he needs to. If St. Louis can find a closer, they can win the division. If not, then they will be at home in October.
4/25/13: The Cardinals are holding on to a one game lead in the NL Central through the first few weeks of play. St. Louis has gotten very good starting pitching so far, even from rookie Shelby Miller and journeyman Jake Westbrook. If the Cardinals have a glaring hole, it is late in the bullpen. Jason Motte is out, possibly for the season. Mitchell Boggs was terrible as a replacement for Motte's closer position, and now cannot hold anything in the eight inning. It could be time for GM John Mozaliak to start looking for some help in the bullpen.
4/18/13: The Cardinals are riding a wave of good pitching and have overcome their 0-2 start. They took two of three from both the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers, and threw in some big offense in the meantime. One of the biggest victories was against former Cards pitcher Kyle Lohse. The Cards offered him a one year, $13 million deal, but he wanted a longer term agreement. Milwaukee finally came through with a three year deal. Lohse went up against the man who replaced him, Shelby Miller, who threw another gem for his second win of the season. The Cardinals lead the NL Central with eight wins so far.
4/11/13: The Cardinals got a tough draw to start the season with a six game western road trip against the rebuilt Arizona Diamondbacks and defending World Champion San Francisco Giants (who eliminated the Cardinals in the National League Championship Series last year). The Redbirds only took one of three games from the Dbacks, but walloped the Giants for two of three in San Francisco. That included dropping nine runs in the fifth inning on Sunday against ace Matt Cain. St. Louis got thier home opening on Monday, the first time since the 1940's that legend Stan "The Man" Musial is not part of the festivities. Musial passed away in January.
4/4/13: Fans in St. Louis were upset this week because of the Opening Day schedule. The Cardinals are among the elite franchises in MLB, along with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers. But the Redbirds did not get the opening day at home. Last season, as the defending World Series Champs, they opened the entire MLB season with a road game in the new Miami Marlins Ballpark. This year, they have a three game road series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, will all games starting at 9pm Central Time. While it may be good for national ratings, it is tough for STL fans to watch those games in their entirety.
3/28/13: The battle for the fifth rotation spot for the Cardinals rages on, with rookie (and top organizational prospect) Shelby Miller going up against Joe Kelly. The winner will see action every five days as a starter. The loser may end up in the bullpen or be sent to AAA affiliate Memphis. But while that may be a good problem to have, the Cards now have a bad one. Closer Jason Motte will start the season on the DL with an injury. Mitchell Boggs will likely take his place. Also, David Freese is scheduled for an MRI on his back after falling chasing a foul ball. His status for opening day is in doubt.
3/21/13: The Cardinals are in their final preparations for the regular season, and it looks like Adam Wainwright will get the nod for the opening day start. Pitcher Chris Carpenter made an appearance at spring training to see the team and offer some inspiration. Carpenter, who is suffering from nerve damage and is out for the seasons, admits that his career may be over. On the field, Pete Kozma looks like the opening day shortstop. He played well in the postseason and so far this year, and the team hopes his strong offense continues for the next six months.
3/14/13: The Cardinals will have a tough decision to make that may affect the rest of their season. Both Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller are competing for the fifth starter position. The loser will likely go to the bullpen. Kelly pitched well last season out of the pen, while Miller is the Cards top pitching prospect and was in Memphis. The team would love to bring Miller to the big leagues but think Kelly may be better in the short term. In other news, shortstop Raphael Furcal will be lost for an extended period of time, possibly for the season. Now the team has to scramble for a replacement.
3/7/13: More bad news for the Cardinals and shortstop Raphael Furcal. His elbow ligiment tear is taking longer to heal than expected. The tear itself is healed, but there is irritation in the area, likely due to bone spurs. He has been deactivated. Raphael joined the Cardinals late in 2011 and provided enthusiasm and a jolt to a middling team that went on to win the World Series. Furcal coined the term "Happy Flight", meaning to win the last game of a road series and make the voyage to the next destination a happy one rather than wallow in the misery of a loss.
2/28/13: Cardinals fans are getting anxious. In just a handful of spring training games, the Cards have yet to win one. Cardinals Nation has been spoiled. Not just in the last 15 years, but throughout history. St. Louis has won 11 World Series championships, that is first in the National League and only trails the Yankees. The Cardinals will be without ace Chris Carpenter for the season, but the team feels confident in Adam Wainwright, Jake Westbrook, Lance Lynn, and some young prospects that they can make the playoffs as the have for the past several years - which includes two more World Series Titles.
2/21/13: The Cardinals are flying under the radar so far. The popular opinion is that Washington, L.A., and Cincinnati are the teams to beat this year in the National League. But the Redbirds return a solid core (minus Chris Carpenter who is out for the season with a shoulder injury). The Cards have a couple of hot prospects at spring training, pitcher Shelby Miller and outfielder Oscar Tavares. Tavares is one of the top minor league players and will push to make the roster, though the team may relegate him to their AAA affiliate in Memphis to ensure he is playing everyday. At some point, Tavares will make it to the majors, and the Cardinals hope they have the next Mike Trout.
2/14/13: Another spring training and another year without an ace pitcher. Two years ago, Adam Wainwright got injured and ended up having Tommy John surgery. Last year, Chris Carpenter had a nerve disorder that kept him off the field until the end of the season. Carp is hurt again and is already shut down for the year with a shoulder problem. At age 37, Carp's career may be over, but let's hope not. He is one of the best competitors in the league. If his playing days are done, it would be wise of the Cardinals to keep him around in a coaching capacity because there is so much he can teach developing pitchers.
2/7/13: Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter will be out for 2013 and may call it a career. Carp missed almost all of last season with a serious nerve condition. He was able to return for three starts at the end of the regular season and three more in the playoffs, but was never fully healthy. Missing the former Cy Young winner creates a void in the rotation. Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia, and Lance Lynn should be slotted as starters, and Jake Westbrook is still around, as is top prospect Shelby Miller. The Cardinals may try to resign free agent Kyle Lohse, who has put up 15 wins for the past two years, though is not the dominant force of Carpenter or Wainwright.
1/31/13: Fans said a final farewell to the "Ultimate Warrior", Stan "The Man" Musial this week. Musial was the face of the franchise since the early 1940's and has not one, but two statues in St. Louis. Musial played for the cardinals for 22 seasons, making 24 All-Star games. Albert Puljols hated to be called "El Hombre" because he felt it was taking away from Musial's name. After 92 years, his time passed, and there has never been a better ambassador for the game or City of St. Louis than Mr. Musial. Rest in Peace my friend.
1/3/13: The Cardinals look like they will go into spring training with question marks at second base. Again. For long time Redbird fans, it seems as if the team has not had a consistent second baseman since Tommy Herr in the 80's. The rotation has not had many big names: Hector Luna, Skip Schumaker, and most recently Matt Carpenter. Carpenter is a third baseman by trade. Unfortunately for him there is a guy named David Freese over on the hot corner. But Carpenter will get a chance to win the position this spring, and maybe provide some stability in the middle base for a while.
12/27/12: The St. Louis Cardinals fans are known as the "Best Fans in Baseball" for a reason - they remember and honor the past. The St. Louis Sportswriters Association is set to honor Mark Whiten and Yadier Molina at their annual dinner this week. Twenty years ago, Whiten was the first Cardinal to hit four homeruns (while recording 12 RBIs) in a single game (against Cincinnati in September 1992). Molina has been the franchise catcher for a number of seasons, won his fifth consecutive Gold Glove, and will be named the St. Louis Baseball Man of the Year.
12/20/12: The Cardinals will have a big decision to make this year (or next offseason) on ace Adam Wainwright. Wainwright, along with Chris Carpenter, are the pillars of the rotation. When both are healthy, they provide a lethal 1-2 punch in any series - particularly in short playoff series. But Waino is entering the final year of his contract, and his next deal will likely be a monster contract. The Cards had the same issue with Albert Pujols two years ago, and ultimately he signed with the Anaheim Angels. Zach Grienke's $25 million per year deal with Dodgers seems to have set the bar, so all Redbird fans can do is hold their breath and hope to keep Waino at a reasonable price.
12/13/12: Since the LA Dodgers apparently have an endless supply of money, which they are using to build the most expensive roster in the history of Major League Baseball, the Cardinals and other mid-market teams are officially on notice when it comes to retaining their star players. The Dodgers have committed themselves to almost $800 million in contracts, most notably $147 for former Cy Young winner Zach Grienke. This will likely drive up the price for Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright, who will be a free agent after the next season. St. Louis would love to lock Waino into a long-term deal, but with all the money flying around who could blame him for testing free agency?
12/6/12: The Cardinals can scratch one item off of their shopping list, another lefty for the bullpen. St. Louis has reached an agreement, which is not finalized, with left handed reliever Randy Choate. Choate split time between the Florida Marlins and the LA Dodgers last season, and led the National League with 80 appearances. He struck out 30 of 116 lefty batters he faced, holding them to a .154 batting average and .218 slugging percentage. Choate will join Mark Rzepczynski (AKA: Scrabble), who struggled through much of last season, as the two left handed relievers in the Card's bullpen next season.
11/29/12: Former Cardinals' first round pick and current top infield prospect Kolton Wong was named to the Arizona Fall League Top Prospect list. The list is selected by managers based upon production in the six week fall league and potential for success in the majors. It is well known that Wong can hit, and that is a major selling point for the Cardinals organization. However, the franchise needs a long-term solution at second base, something they have not really had since the days of Tommy Herr in the early and mid-eighties. Wong may be a year or so away, but expect him to break into the big leagues sooner rather than league.
11/22/12: The Cardinals are most likely parting ways with starting pitcher Kyle Lohse. Since coming back from serious arm surgery two years ago, Lohse has been a solid and dependable starter, and wins about 15 games a year. Certainly good stats, but by no means a top of the rotation guy. Lohse is represented by Scott Boras, who will demand a king's ransom for his client. The Cards let Albert Pujols walk, they will do the same with Lohse. Lohse has gotten interest from the Red Sox, and they may sign him to contract that angers fans in a few years when they realize they are paying $20 million per year for ten wins or less.
11/15/12: Chris Carpenter missed almost all of the 2012 season with a rare upper body nerve condition that required the removal of a lung. Then he came back in the last few weeks of the season and the playoffs to pitch pretty well. Now, the New Hampshire native is on the ice practicing with the St. Louis Blues. Perhaps Carp should make a trip to New York and just settle this CBA lockout mess "Carp-Style". That is, intimidate the owners to taking whatever deal he feels is fair. Was it mentioned that this man had a rib removed in the last six months?
11/8/12: The Cardinals and Mark McGwire appear to be parting ways, as the former slugger has informed the team that he will join Don Mattingly's staff on the L.A. Dodgers. McGwire has been the Cards' hitting coach for the past three years, and the team has been at or near the top of offensive categories under his watch. This is not a case of poor performance or a bad relationship, rather Big Mac wants to be closer to his family in Southern California. McGwire has reportedly informed the Cardinals of his decision, but any announcement will originate from the Dodgers.
11/1/12: Yadier Molina won his fifth consecutive Gold Glove Award this week for his consistently fine work behind the plate for the Cardinals. Yadi is the youngest of the three Molina brother catchers, and easily has the most talent of any of them. Other catchers may get more noteriety, like Buster Posey with the Giants or A.J. Pierzynski from the White Sox. But none has the pure talent to call a game and hold runners like Yadi. What may surprise people is his development as a hitter. He hit .305 in 2011 and .315 this past season. Cards fans can look forward to many more years with Yadi, as he is signed through 2017.
10/18/12: We saw this last year in the World Series. The Cardinals were down to their last stike before elimination, and somehow they found a way to rally and win. They made it tougher this year against the Nationals. Trailing 6-0 early, and down to their last strike, not once, but twice, the never-say-die Cardinals gutted out another improbably victory, avoided elimination, and moved on to face the Giant in the NLCS. St. Louis and San Francisco split the first two games in AT&T; Park, and now the series moves to the Gateway to the West. The winner will play in the World Series against either the Tigers or Yankees.
10/4/12 ? One year after winning the World Series, the St. Louis Cardinals are back in the postseason. With a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds coupled with a Los Angeles Dodgers loss, the Cardinals clinched the second NL Wild Card spot. Cardinals? rookie right-hander Shelby Miller took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a no-decision after throwing six innings and striking out seven. The only run in the game came on a run-scoring single from St. Louis third-baseman Matt Carpenter. St. Louis will meet Kris Medlen and the Atlanta Braves in a one-game playoff to advance for the right to face the Washington Nationals.
10/4/12: The St. Louis Cardinals finished off the regular season in a strong way - winning 11 of their final 14 games to hold on to the second (and last) wild-card spot for the playoffs. Both the Dodgers and Brewers made fierce September runs, but neither could dig themself out of their holes from early season losses. The Cardinals will face the Atlanta Braves in a one-game play-in game to determine who will move on to play the Washington Nationals in the Division Series. The Redbirds will start 16 game winner Kyle Loshe, saving Adam Wainwright for the Nats, if needed.
8/16/12: Seminole Nation put down the Tomahawk Chop and put both hands together to pray for the health of starting quarterback E.J. Manuel. Manuel injured his right foot in practice on Thursday when another Nole roled over it during a scrimmage. Fortunately, it is a minor injury - Coach Jimbo Fisher said he could have played on if it were a game. He will sit out the next few days and should be back next week. Redshirt sophmore Clint Trickett took snaps with the first team. Trickett subbed in for E.J. for parts of three games last season after Manuel was hurt against Oklahoma.
Busch Stadium is home to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals play in the Central Division of the National League. The Cardinals boast 11 World Series Championships, which is the most among National League teams. They are 2nd in the MLB behind the New York Yankees, who have 27.The St. Louis Cardinals are coming off a 2011World Series win against the Texas Rangers. They won the series 4-3. Game 6 of that series will go down as one of the most memorable games in MLB postseason history as the Texas Rangers were one strike away from their first ever MLB Championship in both the 9th and 10th inning, yet could not close the door on the Cardinals.Busch Stadium opened in 2006 and can seat up to 43,975 fans. The record for attendance was set in Game 7 of the World Series vs. the Texas Rangers when 47,399 fans squeezed into the stadium to witness the Cardinals win the pennant. In 2011, Busch Stadium and the Cardinals created a new ticket pricing system called Dynamic Pricing which allows the team to market single game tickets at a better price. The system was successful in helping to achieve the goals of widening the ticket buying fan base. It rewards fans for buying tickets earlier in the season.
8/2/12: The Cardinals just can not figure out who they want to be. They looked like a dominant reiging World Series champion when they took five of six from the Cubs and Dodgers before dropping two of three to Chicago at Wrigley. The Redbirds did not do much at the trade deadline, swapping a prospect for bullpen depth. In the meantime, the dual-personality is hurting them in the standings. The Reds have been the best team in the league since the All-Star break and will be tough to catch. The Cards are not out of the running for a wild-card spot, and figure to improve as they get healthy.
7/26/12: The Cardinals made history on Saturday night, and best of all for Redbird fans, it was against the arch rival Cubs. The Cubs and Cards were locked in a 0-0 pitcher's duel going into the bottom of the 7th. Cubs starter Matt Garza left after the 3rd with tricep cramps, and Justin Germano pitched 3 solid innings until David Freese got on base. Then the floodgates opened. The Cardinals sent 17 batters to the plate and hit 8 extra base hits, including 7 doubles. No homeruns. 17 batters, 10 hits, and 12 runs in an inning ties several league records. Otherwise it was a dull game, with 8.5 other innings where nothing happened.
The St. Louis Cardinals have continued their excellent offensive play and still remain among the top teams in baseball in all four of the major offensive categories. However, winning is a whole other story, and picking up W's hasn't been coming quite as easy to the Cards lately. The Cardinals are only two games over .500, at 33-31, and the defending World Series champions remain tied with the surprise story of the NL so far this season, the Pittsburgh Pirates, for second place in the NL Central. The Cardinals are currently 3 games behind the first-place Cincinnati Reds.
After losing five straight games to the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, the medicine the St. Louis Cardinals needed came in the form of the last-place Houston Astros. The Cardinals got back to their scoring ways in the last two games of their series against Houston, outscoring the 'Stros 18-5 and getting back above .500 to 30-28. Although the Cards are in third place behind Cincinnati and the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central, they are only 2 games out of the division lead and will begin an interleague series against the Cleveland Indians tonight at home.
St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is the leading vote getter for catchers to represent the National League in the 2012 MLB All-Star game, according to the first numbers released by MLB. Molina is hitting .325 with eight homeruns and 32 RBIs on the season. He has not been his usual self behind the plate though, throwing out only 38% of base stealers compared to his 44% career average. The Cardinals will need Molina's production as they open interleague play at home against the two best teams in the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians.
The St. Louis Cardinals, at 27-24, are currently 1.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds in second place in the NL Central division. Despite being second in the league in all of the major offensive categories -- runs, batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage -- the Cardinals are only three games over .500. They will open up a four-game series with the New York Mets on Friday night and former-Met Carlos Beltran will make his return to Citi Field. Beltran has been a major contributor to the Cardinals' success early on, with 15 home runs and 42 RBI.
5/31/12 - Lance Lynn is securing his spot as one of the best pitchers in baseball. Lynn is tied for the league lead in wins (8) and win percentage (.889). Lynn has pitched five or more innings in all ten of his starts this season, giving up more than three runs in a game only once. With Lynn's dominance and the success of the St. Louis offense all season, it is not hard to figure out why Lynn is leading those categories. The Cardinals hope Lynn, along with Jamie Garcia and Kyle Lohse, can hold down the rotation until Chris Carpenter returns from his shoulder injury.
5/23/12: The defending World Series Champs continue to slide, offering rookie Manager Mike Matheny his first true test of leadership in this yound 2012 season. Inconsistent pitching, poor hitting, and a barage of injuries are all culprits, as the Redbirds were swept by the Dodgers in LA, lost their last four, and 8 of their last 10. St. Louis suffered a potentially devastating blow over the weekend when Lance Berkman tore his meniscus and strained other knee ligaments. A best case scenario has Berkman back in two months, but neither he nor the team will rule out season-ending surgery for now.
5/15/12: The Redbirds snapped their five game slide by defeating the rival Chicago Cubs 7-6, thanks to a walk-off RBI single by Yadier Molina. The Cards losing streak included a sweep at home by the visiting Atlanta Braves, a series which Cardinals' pitchers lacked command and effectiveness. The poor pitching allowed the Cincinnati Reds to move 1.5 games back, even though the Reds have not been terribly strong either. More importantly, the slide prevented the Cardinals from opening up a sizable lead in a mediocre division. St. Louis continues to be plagued by injuries, now putting CF Jon Jay on the 15-day DL with a shoulder injury.
5/11/12: The Cardinals lead in the NL Central remained at 2.5 games over the Reds after a 9-6 power outburst against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which included 5 homeruns. The Redbirds are not flat-out dominating the division as they did a few years ago, but division rivals are not giving much chase right now. The Cardinals have sufferred through another heavy round of injuries this year, including time lost for Lance Berkman, Matt Holliday, and ace pitcher Chris Carpente who has not pitched all season and likely will not return before July. However, Lance Lyn has more than filled in for Carp, going 6-0 with a 1.40 ERA.
5/3/12: The Cardinals announced they are retiring former manager Tony LaRussa's number 10 on May 11. In addition to leading the Cardinals to nine playoff appearances, three World Series and two championships, he is also the franchise leader in regular season wins (1408) over 16 seasons. LaRussa is second all-time in postseason wins, and third all-time in wins with 2,728 behind Connie Mack and John McGraw. LaRussa retired the day after the Cardinals won their 11th World Series last October. Mike Matheny took over as manager and has the Redbirds playing where they left off, leading the NL Central and only having lost one series all season.
4/24/12: The Cardinals continue to win series, taking two of three from Pittsburgh for their sixth straight series win to open the year. Following the Pirates series, the Cardinals stood at 11-5, and already opened a 4 game lead on the rest of the NL Central. Rafael Furcal, acquired mid-season last year, is off to a hot start, leading the team with a .362 batting average. Playoff and World Series hero David Freese continued where he left off last year with 15 RBIs and a .333 average. It's too early to tell, but the Redbirds could be on their way to yet another postseason.
4/18/12: The defending World Series Champions are off a solid 8-3 start, having ruined opening night at the new Marlins Park for Miami, and taking 2 of 3 against the Brewers, Cubs, and Reds (and the first of a 3-game series against the Reds, again). Despite the retirements of Manager Tony LaRuss and Pitching Coach Dave Duncan, the defection of Albert Pujols, and injuries to Chris Carpenter, Lance Berkman, and David Freese, the Redbirds just keep plugging in new guys and winning. Division games continue to dominate through the end of April, with series against the Pirates, Cubs, and Brewers upcoming.
