Relive the Sochi closing ceremony

 

Sochi officially closed the Olympics with a celebration of athletes and Russian culture, as well as a handoff to Pyeongchang for 2018.

 

Ski cross appeal from Canada and Slovenia rejected

Canada and Slovenia’s appeals to have the three French medalists in men’s ski cross disqualified for wearing modified suits have been rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

 

Men's hockey: Final

 

Canada’s overwhelming defense allowed three goals in the Olympics, and Canada won its first Olympic gold away from North America since 1952. That was also the last time Canada won gold in back-to-back Olympics.

 

MEDAL ALERT

 

The United States has one more medal to throw on top of the pile, though it’s not enough to move ahead of Russia in the medal count. Steve Holcomb’s four-man bobsled team won bronze, giving Holcomb his second medal of the Sochi games. Russia took gold, and Latvia won silver. Only two medals are left to be handed out: a gold and silver in men’s hockey.

 

Zubkov moves closer to bobsledding history

Alexander Zubkov helped put a healthy distance between Russia-1 and its competitors in the third heat of the four-man bobsled on Sunday. Latvia-1 is in second while USA-1 sits in third.

 

MEDAL ALERT

 

The host country of Russia swept medals in one of the final events of the Sochi Games. In the men’s 50km cross country mass start, Alexander Legkov won gold. He was followed by Maxim Vylegzhanin with the silver, and coming in one tenth of a second later, Ilia Chernousov with the bronze. American Noah Hoffman finished in 26th place.

 

Men's hockey: Bronze medal game

 

Teemu Selanne, playing in his sixth Olympics at age 43, led a motivated Finland team to bronze. The United States failed to recover from its loss to Canada in the semifinals and meandered through this game. All that’s left is to figure out what went wrong.

 

MEDAL ALERT

 

Austria’s Mario Matt had the final slalom run of the top 30 skiers, and won the gold with it. His teammate, Marcel Hirscher, held the lead through much of the second run, but had to settle for the gold after Matt’s run. Henrik Kristofferson from Norway took the bronze. American Ted Ligety, who won gold in the giant slalom, did not finish his second run.

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia – Ole Einar Bjoerndalen was a perfect 10-10 shooting with his shiny red rifle. But in the final Olympic event of his career, the 40-year-old Norwegian did not add to his record collection of medals in the Winter Games.

Bjoerndalen did the third leg Saturday night for a four-man Norwegian team that placed fourth in the men’s 4X7.5 kilometer relay. Russia won the event.

So he’ll leave here with 13 medals in six Olympics – most ever by a single Winter Olympian.

MEDAL ALERT

 

Is it any surprise the Dutch won the last speedskating events of the Olympics? The Netherlands won the men’s and women’s team pursuit final with an Olympic record. South Korea took silver, and Poland won bronze. Poland won silver in the women’s race, followed by Russia with the bronze.
