Meet the Star’s editorial board

The Star’s editorial board is responsible for the editorial and op-ed pages, as well as content on the Opinion section of thestar.com. That includes editorials, letters to the editor, columns, opinion articles by guest commentators and multi-media features on thestar.com Opinion section.

Andrew Phillips has been editor of the Star's editorial pages since January 2011. Previously he was editor of the Victoria Times Colonist and The Gazette in Montreal. He has also been a writer and editor at The Gazette, CBC Television News, and Maclean's , as well as business editor of the Star. He holds a degree in history and economics from McGill University and taught journalism at Concordia University.

Gordon Barthos, a member of the editorial board since 1994, writes on Canadian politics, foreign affairs and defence. A graduate of the Université de Montréal (Loyola College) and Oxford University, he wrote for The Gazette in Montreal, opened the Star’s Middle East bureau and reported from Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Europe, Central America, Asia and North Africa.

Carol Goar has been a member of the editorial board since 1997. She served as editor of the editorial pages from 1998 to 2002. Since then she has written a column focusing on politics and social policy. She has also been the Star’s Washington bureau chief and national affairs columnist. Previously she wrote for Maclean’s, Canadian Press, FP News Service and the Ottawa Citizen. She is a graduate of Carleton University.

Leslie Papp has been on the editorial board, specializing in municipal affairs, since 2003. He holds a master’s degree in modern European history from McMaster University and a journalism degree from Carleton University. During more than 20 years at the Star, he won a National Newspaper Award for enterprise reporting in 2000, and served on the investigative team, and as a reporter covering medical issues, labour and Queen’s Park.

Jordan Himelfarb has been a member of the editorial board since 2012. In addition to writing about federal politics and culture, he edits the Star's opinion page. He also served as co-editor of the music website Said the Gramophone, one of Time magazine's top blogs of 2009, and co-edited the 2013 book “Tax Is Not a Four-Letter Word.” He was a finalist for the 2012 National Newspaper Award in editorial writing.

Dianne Rinehart joined the editorial board in July 2014, specializing in provincial and social issues. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, and an MA candidate at Carleton University, she has reported from Moscow for USA Today, in Ottawa for The Canadian Press, and in Vancouver for the Vancouver Sun. She has also served as editor-in-chief of Metro’s English-language papers in Canada and of Homemakers magazine, and was previously the Star’s books editor.
