I understand the CUPE job action that directs staff to “work to rule.” Sad but acceptable during labour strife.
But we are still hearing that schools are becoming unclean and possibly unsafe as a result? A spokesman said that they will be closely monitoring things. Please explain how caretakers or custodians can refuse to clean the school they work in? Surely this part of their job description? Shouldn’t work to rule include doing your job if you are not on strike?
This task is not an extra or beyond the job spec. If the students acted like this there would be disciplinary reaction. Where is the role modelling that is inherent in such positions?
