A 20-year-old Mississauga man has been charged with the murder of his mother after an alleged domestic dispute over the weekend.

Peel Police were called to a residence on Southfork Dr., near Mavis and Britannia Rds. in Mississauga, at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday; Vaishali Patel, 41, was soon rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later died. Police have not yet disclosed the nature of Patel’s injuries.

The woman’s son, Kunal Bhavan, has been charged with second-degree murder.

“I was shocked (Sunday) morning when I read about the charges,” said Parth Midha, a friend who attended high school with Bhavan. “He was a regular kid throughout high school — we played sports together in middle school, he was a funny guy, and got along well with people.”

A bail hearing for Bhavan was scheduled at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Sunday.
