Introduction

Julio Iglesias in 2005.
Latin music (Musica latina in Spanish and Portuguese) is a musical category encompassing any music in Spanish from anywhere around the world regardless of genre mainly from Latin America and Spain. In addition to Spanish-language music, the definition also usually includes Portuguese-language music from Brazil and sometimes Portugal. The term, "Latin music", originates from the United States (US) due to the growing influence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the American music market beginning in the 1980s. US trade industry groups such as Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Billboard magazine define "Latin music" as a type of release with most of its lyrics in Spanish.

Major record labels such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music have divisions which oversees acts from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula with an executive that manages both regions. Spain, Brazil, Mexico, and the United States are the largest Latin music markets in the world. In the 1990s, artists from Italy such as Eros Ramazzotti, Laura Pausini, and Tiziano Ferro successfully crossed over to the Latin music field by recording Spanish-language versions of their songs. In 2000, the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS) established the Latin Grammy Awards to recognize musicians who perform in Spanish or Portuguese. Unlike the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences which only recruits members in the United States, LARAS extends its membership to Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking communities worldwide including Latin America, Spain, and Portugal. In 2013, Spanish singer Julio Iglesias was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the best-selling male Latin artist of all time.

"No Me Queda Más" (English: "There's Nothing Left for Me") is a song recorded by American Tejano pop recording artist Selena from her fifth studio album Amor Prohibido (1994). It was released by EMI Latin on 10 November 1994, as the album's third single. "No Me Queda Más" was composed by lead keyboardist of Selena y Los Dinos, Ricky Vela; who had fallen in love with Selena's sister and drummer of the group, Suzette Quintanilla. Selena's brother and producer of her music, A.B. Quintanilla III produced "No Me Queda Más" alongside Argentine arranger and composer Bebu Silvetti.

"No Me Queda Más" is a Spanish-language down-tempo ballad with influences of flamenco and ranchera music. The central theme and lyrical content of the song conveys the story of a bewildered fiancée whose ex-lover has left her for another women and keeps an illusion that he will one day go back with her; while her ex-lover denies even loving her, she wishes him happiness. "No Me Queda Más" peaked at number one on the US Hot Latin Tracks for seven non-consecutive weeks and the Latin Regional Mexican Airplay charts, giving Selena her third consecutive number one single from Amor Prohibido.

Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira has released ten studio albums, four live albums, two compilation albums, forty-nine singles (including nine as featured artist), and nine promotional singles. With sales of more than 70 million albums worldwide, she is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time. She is the only South American artist to peak at number one on the Australian Singles Chart, the UK Singles Chart, and the US Billboard Hot 100. Four of her singles, "Whenever, Wherever", "Hips Don't Lie", "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", and "Loca", have achieved sales in excess of five million units, becoming some of the best-selling singles worldwide.

Shakira's musical career started at the age of 13 when she signed with Sony Music. Her first two studio albums, Magia and Peligro, were released in Colombia in 1991 and 1993 respectively. They performed poorly and had low sales, with the former selling fewer than 1000 copies. She found success across Latin America with her next album Pies Descalzos (1995) and its lead single "Estoy Aquí". The album received a "Diamond Prism" certification award in Colombia, selling more than one million units in the country alone.

Hasta la Raíz (Down to the Root) is the sixth studio album by Mexican recording artist Natalia Lafourcade. It was released on March 17, 2015 by Sony Music Latin. After attaining success with her previous album, Mujer Divina, a tribute to Mexican singer-songwriter Agustín Lara, Lafourcade decided to record an album with original recordings. Lafourcade spent three years in the writing process, searching for inspiration in different cities, resulting in songs with very personal feelings regarding love. The record was produced by Lafourcade, who was assisted by Argentinian musician Cachorro López and Mexican artist Leonel García.

Upon its release Hasta la Raíz received mixed to positive reviews from music critics, with some critics being skeptical about her songwriting and staying on her comfort zone as an artist, while others praised her evolution as a musician and named the album one of the best pop releases of the year. The record peak at number twelve on the US Billboard Latin Albums and number-one in Mexico, where it was certified platinum and shipped over 30,000 copies in the country.
