Carlo Mattogno (born 1951) is an Italian author, specialist in text analysis and critique,[1] and a Holocaust denier.

Life and works[edit]

Mattogno was born in Orvieto, Italy, now living with his family in a suburb of Rome. In his youth he carried out advanced linguistic studies in Latin, Greek and Hebrew.[1]

He is the author of numerous books and monographs,[2] several of which have been published in the Journal of Historical Review.

In 1985 Mattogno published the booklet The Gerstein Report – Anatomy of a Fraud[3] and in 1988 the book The Myth of the Extermination of the Jews. Since the 1990s Mattogno has largely focused his publications on the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp.

Mattogno is a former member of the advisory board of the Institute for Historical Review[2] and current editorial advisor for the journal printed by the Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust,[4] bodies which promote Holocaust denial.[5] Mattogno also contributes to the French-language journal Annales d'histoire révisionniste[2] and the online and print journal, Inconvenient History.[6]

Mattogno came out in defense of bishop Richard Williamson of the Society of Saint Pius X during a much-publicized Holocaust history controversy.[7]

Mainstream holocaust historians have regarded Mattogno's work as valuable. The Institut für Zeitgeschichte (Institute of Contemporary History) in Munich quotes his 2005 book on the Central Construction Office at Auschwitz, 'The Central Construction Office of the Waffen-SS and Police Auschwitz—Organization, Responsibilities, Activities'.,[8] whilst historian Ernst Nolte was impressed by Mattogno's work, due to which he conceded that, with respect to "their mastery of the source material and especially in their critique of the sources," the revisionist studies on the topic "probably surpass those of the established historians in Germany".[9] Jean-Claude Pressac, who invited Mattogno into his home and regarded him as a scholar,[10] has stated of Mattogo that he is "the best revisionist researcher".[11]
