Prince Hubertus of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (24 August 1909 – 26 November 1943) was a member of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the second eldest son of Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife, Princess Victoria Adelaide of Schleswig-Holstein.

Early life[edit]

Prince Hubertus was born at Reinhardsbrunn Castle, Germany. His father, Charles Edward, was the reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the only son of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, and a grandson of Queen Victoria. Hubertus, thus, held the title of a Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and a Prince of the United Kingdom, with the style His Highness as a great-grandchild of the British monarch.

Deprivation[edit]

In 1917, George V passed letters patent removing the title of Prince and Princess and the style Highness for all great-grandchildren of a British monarch, thus depriving Hubertus of his British titles. On top of this, at the end of World War I, his father was forced to abdicate as Duke and become a private citizen.
