The Southern Alberta Alternative Energy Partnership is a partnership of 38 municipalities in south west Alberta that have the sole purpose of trying to attract renewable energy companies. The initiative is a collaboration between Economic Development Lethbridge, Southgrow and Alberta Southwest Regional Alliance. [1] In November 2011, the parties sent a letter to Alberta Premier Alison Redford and key ministers encouraging further policy and investment in renewable energy industry development. Pending a response, Alberta SouthWest Regional Alliance, Economic Development Lethbridge and SouthGrow Regional Initiative continue to work together and are exploring further opportunities with the Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta.

Bio energy[edit]

Southern Alberta is considered the nexus for most of the cattle production that occurs in Alberta, which is very lucrative for any biogas company looking to become established.

Solar energy[edit]

Southern Alberta has the perfect climate for using solar technology largely due to a mean winter temperature of approximately −10 °C (14 °F).

Wind energy[edit]

Currently there are approximately 70 wind development projects totalling 12,000 Megawatts, with a large portion in southern Alberta.

The Government of Alberta is currently working on an alternative and renewable energy strategy that CanWEA expects will further enhance Alberta’s ability to compete for additional wind energy investment.
