2006 student protests in Chile[edit]

You may add the 2006 student protests in Chile in the template.

Rakela (talk) 18:32, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

And the template is not cronologically in order (I'm not a english laguage user, so I decline to modify it)
Rakela (talk) 18:35, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
It's in alphabetical order by state, or should be.Rangoon11 (talk) 21:50, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
Is not better by year? Rakela (talk) 12:57, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
It is, in fact, not in alaphabetical order by state and I too think that it should be in chronological order. If no one disagrees, I will change that.--JohKar (talk) 11:30, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
I disagree, many of the protests are multi-year and in my view alpha-order is the most logical approach. I will correct the mistakes now.Rangoon11 (talk) 11:33, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
I don't think so. The Protests against the War in Afghanistan (2001–present), for example, are not against the Afhan government and happen world wide. To which state do they belong? A chronological order would not have that problem. Multi-year protests should, of course, be ordered by their start date.--JohKar (talk) 11:44, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
The global protests are prior to the national ones, hence the order. I will clarify this now. Rangoon11 (talk) 11:47, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
It's clearer now, good job! Still some questions remain: Why do some links include a date while others do not? Also why do some links reflect the actual title of the referenced article accurately and others do not? Last but not least: What happens if there are people of say two countries protesting against the government of a third company and the like? Already global?--JohKar (talk) 11:57, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
There isn't necessarily any 'perfect' or 'correct' approach but for me the dates are only necessary for identification, when there is no possibility for confusion the dates can in my view safely be omitted to save space. Re titles, for this template I feel it is important to state the sovereign state for idenitification purposes, whilst the article title may not do so. For neatness the style of the titles have also been conformed here. Re your third point, not sure, let's cross that bridge when we come to it! Rangoon11 (talk) 12:07, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Do you think the template could benefit from making a fourth group (between Student protests and Other) called "Global" or something the like? Also, what do you think of homogenising the titles, maybe something like: [state name date]. I think it might be easier to see the alpha-order then and one might find faster what he/she is looking for. And I've got another question: Why is "Anti-government" even in the title?--JohKar (talk) 12:28, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes I would be happy with both of your suggestion. Re the title, I think that the current one works well and defines a coherent group of articles, have you got a suggestion for an alternative? Rangoon11 (talk) 12:32, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm not quite sure about an alternative title. I just thought the "Anti-government" part could be skiped, so that the title would just be "Protests in the 21st century". The reason for that is because many of the protests mentioned were not exclusivley anti-government but also against an economic system or local economic conditions which were not a direct result of government policies. Concerning the segmentation I think that the redundancy of the "2010–2011 Middle East and North Africa protests" is not absolutely necessary. We could just have one level with: "Global protests", "Middle East and North Africa protests", "Colour revolution", "Student protests" and "Other protests" or something the like.--JohKar (talk) 12:52, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
No I disagree with that idea, I think that the split between revolutions and uprisings and other protests is valid and useful. Re the title, so far as I am aware all of the protests here are in some way anti-government, if not then they should be removed. Expansion to any protests per se would in my view be too wide. Rangoon11 (talk) 12:57, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
I have now added in a Global sub-section as suggested. Rangoon11 (talk) 13:01, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Looks good! I have applied the new format to the articles in "Revolutions and uprisings" under "Other" and will continue with the rest when I've got more time.--JohKar (talk) 13:12, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Applied the new format to the rest--JohKar (talk) 10:47, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Um, question![edit]

What is the point of this template? 21st Century Protests? Really? Where can I find the 20th century protests template? I sure would like to take a look at the length of that. 69.22.187.117 (talk) 20:50, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

It is a perfectly reasonable template and of a perfectly reasonable length. At some point it may become necessary to limit or narrow the scope but that point is far from being reached. Rangoon11 (talk) 21:28, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
We've reached a point now where routine demonstrations from political movements (Tea Party protests) and single-issue student demonstrations (2009 California college tuition hike protests) are being added to a template originally intended to group together revolutionary-type protests. It's time to break this template up or apply a stricter standard to inclusion. Quigley (talk) 20:19, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Reference to the 2010–2011 Middle East and North Africa protests[edit]

Is it really necessary to call this group "2010–2011 Middle East and North Africa protests"? Considering the fact that the whole template is called "Anti-government protests in the 21st century" there should be not much danger of any confusion, so I think it could just be named "Middle East and North Africa protests".--JohKar (talk) 19:36, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes I think this is necessary because the current series of protests, uprisings and revolutions in that region are regarded as being closely connected, and it is appropriate to give them a sub section separate from other protests which occured in the region in prior years. Rangoon11 (talk) 22:04, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Names of sections[edit]

  • The "colour revolutions" did not only occur in the USSR, as is clearly stated in the referenced article. Therefore the name "Colour revolutions in the former USSR" should be changed in my view.
  • For purposes of consistency the new format could also be applied to the name of the "2010–2011 Middle East and North Africa protests" section. The new name for this section would then be "Middle Eastern and North African protests (2010-2011)".--JohKar (talk) 06:43, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
Just noticed that the name of the "Arab Spring" article was changed, so I also changed the concerning section of the template accordingly. I also changed the name of the "Colour revolutions" section since no one disagreed.--JohKar (talk) 12:53, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Is the Libyan Civil War really necessary for this template?[edit]

Given the conflict did originate in protests, I believe it needs to go. It is not that simple anymore. -- 92.4.54.144 (talk) 19:44, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Split[edit]

This template is becoming too large and is only going to continue growing. As the century is only one eighth of the way through, I propose that we split it into templates for the respective decades, i.e Anti-government protests in the 2000s and Anti-government protests in the 2010s. --124.184.165.154 (talk) 14:07, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

A split will certainly be needed at some point - and decades is a reasonable idea - but the template does not seem excessively large at present, and is defaulted to collapse.Rangoon11 (talk) 15:13, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
I think it is time to revisit this proposal. The template's size has increased significantly in the last two years and this should be addressed with the split proposed in 2012. --DilatoryRevolution (talk) 02:20, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
I suggest splitting by decades and doing it now already. There are plenty of events for the 2010s.193.40.12.44 (talk) 12:23, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Suggestions?[edit]

I don't know how, but I think this template needs to be organized. --Երևանցի talk 04:14, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Chronologic order Vs. alphabetic order[edit]

I prefer if the content of this Template would be displayed in chronologic order and not in alphabetic order. But right now this Template uses no system... So I suggest we pick one system and stick to that. To make things easier I created a "preference poll" below (to make it easier to build consensus). — Yulia Romero • Talk to me! 16:01, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Preference poll (Question is: Do you prefer a chronologic order or alphabetic order in this template?)[edit]

  • Chronologic order — Yulia Romero • Talk to me! 16:01, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
  • chronological order, but only for the "other protests" section and leave the revolutions section as it is. --Երևանցի talk 17:49, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Valencian Spring[edit]

Among thr Student protests it lacks the article about the ca:Primavera Valenciana (:es).--Coentor (talk) 11:58, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

2014 Ferguson unrest[edit]

I have reverted the recent addition of 2014 Ferguson unrest. This was a protest against police action, and not an anti-government protest. StAnselm (talk) 18:08, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
