Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), Gazipur (Bengali: ঢাকা প্রকৌশল ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) or DUET is a public university for the study of engineering in Bangladesh. The university offers four-year bachelor's degrees in Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Industrial and Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Textile Engineering and Five-years Bachelor of Architecture. Only the Diploma in Engineering holders can avail themselves of enrolling here for bachelor's degree in Engineering and Architecture. It is one of the nine PhD granting research universities of Bangladesh.

Every year, around 540 students enroll in undergraduate programs to study engineering and architecture. In the undergraduate admission test, only about top 10% students can get admitted among 5,000 selected candidates. The number of teachers is about 300.

History[edit]

The university originated in 1980 as the College of Engineering at its temporary campus at Tejgaon, Dhaka under the University of Dhaka offering four years ' Bachelor's degree in Civil, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical Engineering. After a short time, the College of Engineering was renamed as Dhaka Engineering College (DEC). Then DEC shifted to its present permanent campus Gazipur City in 1983.

DEC was converted to the Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Dhaka as a degree awarding Institute by the government ordinance in 1986. From September 2003, Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), Gazipur was created out of BIT, Dhaka.

Grading system[edit]

The academic year consists of two semesters. Academic courses are based on a credit system. The grading system:

Location[edit]

The university is located at Gazipur District, 40 km north of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh (about 20 km from Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka). Gazipur is connected by roads and railway with Dhaka and other cities of Bangladesh.

Transport[edit]

Gazipur operates its own shuttle bus service between Dhaka city and the campus. At weekends a service is provided for meeting the weekend recreational and other needs.

Food system[edit]

In DUET each student hall has dining for its resident students. DUET has a cafeteria for the students, teachers and staffs near to the academic buildings. Apart from this, student group discussions,and cultural programs are undertaken in the cafeteria. Most students take their breakfast in the DUET cafeteria or outside restaurants. Duet Cafeteria (in front of DUET) is popular with the students.

Central Students' Union, DUET[edit]

This is an organization representing students. All students at the institute are members. Most of the office bearers are students of the university and are directly elected by the students for a one-year term. Teacher office bearers are nominated by the VC of the university.
