Rachel A. Blaney is a Canadian politician who was elected during the 2015 Canadian federal election as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of Canada to represent the federal electoral district North Island—Powell River.[2][3]. Ms. Blaney’s background is distinctive: Her family of origin is Caucasian but she was adopted by a First Nations family as a toddler when her mother married a man from the Stellat’en First Nation. Raised in Terrace, British Columbia and surrounded by her adoptive family and relatives, Ms. Blaney has a deep understanding both of the richness of Indigenous culture and the legacy of cultural genocide in Canada. Her immersion in First Nations culture has continued on in her adult life through her marriage of nearly twenty years to Darren Blaney, a respected leader of the Homalco First Nation, the northernmost community of Coast Salish people in British Columbia.
Blaney was appointed the NDP critic for multiculturalism and the deputy critic for Infrastructure and Communities in the 42nd Canadian Parliament.[4]
