Personality disorders are collectively a category of mental disorder. They are characterized by a long-term pattern of serious behavioral differences that significantly affect the functioning of the individual in personal and social situations. Personality disorders are represented as trait disorders on Axis II of the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-IV, as opposed to the state disorders on Axis I.
Note that despite its name, multiple personality disorder, also known as dissociative identity disorder, is not a personality disorder.
