William Henry Steeves - Father of Confederation

Hello

I am trying to track down the ancestors of Doris Elizabeth Steeves, who married Robert Edward John Layton (25 Dec 1925 - 9 May 2002) on 6 March 1948 in Westmount Quebec. Doris is a great-niece of William Henry Steeves, and mother of John Gilbert "Jack" Layton, the leader of the NDP.

Can anyone provide info on how Doris Elizabeth Steeves is linked to William Henry Steeves? As a great-niece, her grandfather would be one of William Henry Steeves' brothers, but I can't make the connection.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Dawn

Why not just ask Jack Layton? His e-mail is at:

I can't help you make the connection with Doris, but I have William's father and his mother's family back to Ireland if you wish.

According to the Steeves Family Descendants Book by Dr. Esther Clark Wright
this is a brief ancestrry for Doris:
She is descended from son Henry as is William Henry

7th Generation Doris Steeves who md Robert Edward John Layton
6th John Trites Rowe Steeves md Constance Burgoyne
5th John Trites Steeves md Laura Rowe
4th Christian Albertson Steeves md Martha Ann
Steeves
3rd John Steeves ** md Mary Ann or Nancy Trites
2nd Henry Steeves (Stief(f) md Mary Beck
Henry of course is a son of Johann Heinrich and Regina Stahlecker from PA & Germany who came to New Brunswick.
William Henry's father was Joseph, son of Henry above, who md Martha Gross.
John** above and Joseph are brothers.
You can contact me for more detail but the Book should be available in most large libraries in southern N. B. if that is where you live.
Her book, of course, is subject to errors.
