Tips on using and contributing to Wikipedia

Wikipedia's tips library. Welcome! Here you can digest how to use Wikipedia in bite-sized morsels. The tips listed below were created for the Tip of the day project, but are listed here by title and organized by subject area for your convenience. To search key words or terms on this page with your browser, press Ctrl+F or F3, or ⌘ Command+F on a Mac. See also the Tip of the day talk page where the tips are written by volunteers like you. Wikipedia provides an introduction for aspiring contributors that contains useful information and resources on the basics needed to comprehend, comment on, and edit Wikipedia. For more directories, see the links on the navigation bar above. Tip of the day... Custom signatures Signatures in Wikipedia are identifying information that you put after writing a comment on a talk page. They tell other editors who wrote the comment and when. This can be done by writing ~~~~. Signatures can optionally be spruced up with colors. To add color to your signature, go to the Preferences link at the top of the page. In the nickname box, enter [[User:MYUSERNAME|<font color="MYCOLOR">MYUSERNAME</font>]]. Replace "MYCOLOR" with a color you like, such as "red" or "green". Replace MYUSERNAME with your username. Finally, check the "raw signature" box, and save your preferences. Now, when you type four tildes ~~~~ in a talk page, your new signature will appear. The color names that can be used in standard HTML are given in the standards document here. Using the hexadecimal RGB-style colors (such as #008000) you can choose any color you like from about sixteen million, not just the 140 colors that have names in standard HTML. More complex signatures are possible; however, your signature as typed into the box above should not be unnecessarily long. Long signatures make pages larger and harder to edit, and are discouraged. | Tip of the moment... Double click editing When this setting is activated, double-clicking anywhere on a page does the same thing as clicking on the edit this page tab. This only works with browsers that support Javascript (but all of the latest versions of all of the major browsers do). To enable this feature click the my preferences link at the top of the page. Then click the Editing tab. Then check the box next to Edit pages on double click (JavaScript). And finally, click the Save button. Note: After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Mozilla/Safari: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R), IE: press Ctrl-F5, Opera/Konqueror: press F5.
