Athabasca River Water Management FrameworkAlberta's Athabasca River Water Management Framework sets strict limits on how much water oil sands companies can remove from the Athabasca River. The framework achieves a high level of protection while balancing the Athabasca River's needs with those of community and industry. The goal is to ensure low impact to the river ecosystem as well as water conservation and innovation on the part of water users. Alberta is taking a phased approach with the framework. The immediate framework is based on scientific research, stakeholder input and expertise within the provincial and federal government. Monitoring and assessment of the protective and socio-economic goals in the region will continue throughout the life of oil sands projects and the framework will be adjusted as necessary to ensure water use does not threaten ecosystem sustainability.
