Sight Unseen: International Photography by Blind Artists is the first major exhibition of work by acclaimed international blind photographers, uniquely enhanced by the CMHR. It explores the idea that blind people can often see in ways that sighted people cannot. The core exhibition features photographs by artists with various degrees of vision loss who use different technologies and creative methods to express what they see.
Sight Unseen is also the first museum exhibition in the world to use cutting-edge technology by 3DPhotoWorks that creates three-dimensional, tactile versions of the photographs for people with vision loss. Touch-activated sensors provide audio information about the images. Description also flows through the Museum’s mobile app.
Participatory experiences and unique programming will spark thought and conversation about the rights of people with disabilities – and the attitudes or stereotypes that continue to pose barriers.
The exhibition is located in the Museum’s Level 1 Gallery.
Please be advised that some of the images contain nudity.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Museum is committed to offering a rich and fully accessible experience for visitors of all abilities – onsite and online. Its award-winning inclusive design has set a new global example for cultural institutions.
