Canada's Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

Seventh Annual National Roundtable for Disaster Risk Reduction

Understanding the Risks

The Seventh Annual National Roundtable for Disaster Risk Reduction will be held from November 21-22, 2016, in Montreal, Quebec.

National Roundtable for Disaster Risk Reduction

In June 2009, as part of its commitment to deliver on the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction's Hyogo Framework for Action, Canada announced the establishment of a National Platform for disaster risk reduction (DRR) to build multi-stakeholder coordinated leadership in DRR.

A National Platform for DRR can broadly be defined as an assembly of interdisciplinary stakeholders brought together by their shared interest in reducing the risks posed by disasters. Canada's Platform seeks to build a sense of national, cross-sectoral ownership in the disaster risk reduction process through coordinated leadership and action. National ownership is built through an inclusive, participatory process.

Canada's Platform brings together stakeholders from a broad cross section of society including the public sector, the private sector, academia, non-governmental organizations (NGO), professional associations, and Aboriginal groups.

In January 2005, 168 countries, including Canada, adopted the United Nations Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA), leading to the creation of Canada's Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

With the HFA set to expire in 2015, international discussions took place on a successor “post-2015 Hyogo Framework Agreement” (HFA2) to build on the experience gained through regional and national strategies, and to continue the momentum and progress achieved to date on DRR and resilience, with the goal of adopting the new Sendai Framework at the Third World Conference on DRR that was held on March 13-18, 2015, in Sendai, Japan.

Annual Roundtable for Canada's Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction:
The Sixth Annual National Roundtable for Disaster Risk Reduction took place in Calgary, Alberta in November 2-3, 2015. The report will be available in spring 2016.

The Annual National Roundtable facilitates coordination and implementation of Canada's Platform activities, and serves as a multi-stakeholder mechanism for discussing national DRR issues and information sharing. Participation is open to any interested party concerned with reducing the risks posed by disasters, including members of the private sector, all levels of government, non-governmental organizations, students and the general public. Since the Platform's inception, six Roundtables have been held in locations across Canada:

  • October 26, 2010 – Fredericton, New Brunswick
  • October 18, 2011 – Ottawa, Ontario
  • October 23, 2012 – Vancouver, British Columbia
  • November 5, 2013 – Regina, Saskatchewan
  • October 21, 2014 – Toronto, Ontario
  • November 2-3, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta
