Web feed basics

What is a Web feed?

A Web feed is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. Content distributors, such as Buyandsell.gc.ca/tenders, syndicate a Web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it.

What is used on Buyandsell.gc.ca?

Up until recently, users only had access to RSS web feeds on Buyandsell.gc.ca, but now users have the choice between RSS or Atom feeds.

What is a feed reader?

A feed reader gathers and displays Web feeds from different websites into one place. Using a feed reader means that you can receive updated information from many websites sent to you, without having to visit each site individually. To have access to a feed, your computer or mobile device needs to have a feed reader.

The latest and most modern version of most Web browsers (such as Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Explorer) and many email applications (such as Microsoft Outlook) have built-in feed readers. For other programs such as Chrome (and Firefox), feed reader extensions or add-ons are available. (Older versions of some Web browsers and email applications may not have a built-in feed reader system.)

How do I find a feed reader?

There are a number of feed readers available as a Web service or to download and for purchase on the Internet.

Troubleshooting feeds

I am getting an error message when I use the URL (i.e. web address) in my feed reader?

If you try to add a search results page URL or a tender notice URL as a feed address in a feed reader, you will get an error message. The URL for a search result is different from a feed address. Be sure to use the feed address that is generated by clicking the RSS feed icon RSS feed icon or the Atom feed icon Atom feed icon.
