Climate Change

A changing climate presents risks and opportunities for Canada’s regions and resource sectors. As a vast country with a diverse climate and economy, addressing climate change in Canada requires targeted and collaborative action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation) and increases our ability to adapt to climate impacts.

NRCan works with other government departments, the provinces, territories and other Canadian and international partners to address our changing climate while focusing on the responsible development of natural resources.

NRCan brings expertise on climate change in three strategic areas:

Impacts and Adaptation

Equipping Canadians to adapt to our changing climate

NRCan’s impacts and adaptation program facilitates the development and exchange of adaptation-related information, knowledge, and tools needed to plan and implement practical adaptation measures for enhancing resilience to climate impacts, well-being, and economic competitiveness. Activity areas include:

  • Adaptation Platform - a collaborative initiative bringing together federal, provincial and territorial governments, professional organizations and natural resource industry associations
  • Tools for Adaptation  - decision-support tools developed in collaboration with practitioners
  • Assessments – syntheses of scientific understanding of climate change impacts and adaptation in Canada
  • Regional Initiatives – regional specific knowledge products and tools developed through the Regional Adaptation Collaboratives
  • Adaptation 101 – an introduction to climate change impacts and adaptation in Canada

Science

Climate change-related science at NRCan provides high-quality data and unbiased, evidence-based information to Canadian policy makers, regulators, decision makers or the general public. NRCan work in this area focuses on:

  • providing governments and the forest industry with scientific knowledge on forest disturbances (e.g., pests, fire), through the Canadian Forest Service, to assess risks, forecast impacts, and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies
  • making systematic, long-term measurements of Indicators of Change, including permafrost, glacier mass balance, snow cover and land cover
  • conducting Geoscience to help assess the challenges and opportunities posed by climate change impacts on resource development in the North, and adaptation strategies for responsible development of those resources
  • developing national and sectoral science assessments that present current knowledge on climate impacts and adaptation

Energy Efficiency

Leading Canadians to Energy Efficiency at Home, at Work and on the Road

Through the Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE), NRCan works to lead Canadians to energy efficiency at home, at work and on the road. The goal is to benefit all Canadians economically, environmentally and socially by securing the responsible use of our energy resources. Towards reaching this objective, NRCan’s work in this area focuses on:

  • Helping homeowners save on their energy bills and make their homes more comfortable by using OEE’s Housing and Energy Efficient Products programs;
  • Supporting lower fuel costs and fewer emissions for Cars, Light Trucks and Commercial Vehicles and expanding the use of Alternative Fuels;
  • Improving the energy performance of new and existing commercial and institutional buildings, including federally owned and operated buildings; and,
  • Encouraging energy cost savings and accelerating productivity improvements within Canada’s Industrial sector.
