“Citizenship implies complete ownership of all that the country has been and is. I often tell people that citizenship is a fixed menu, not a buffet. There is no half measure. There is no absolution in saying, “That happened before I got here.” In a society so founded on immigrants—and except for the Aboriginal peoples, that is all of us—we must share all elements of our history, what we have been and what we hope to be.” – Governor General Adrienne Clarkson (1999-2005), Speech on the occasion of the 8th William Kilbourn Memorial Lecture (Toronto, October 18, 2004)
