Canada and the Arctic

Canadian leadership on international Arctic issues is undertaken by Global Affairs Canada under the direction of Canada’s Senior Arctic Official.

Global Affairs Canada, with the support of other government departments with Arctic and North mandates, work together to set out a vision for Canada’s actions in the Arctic.

On March 10, 2016, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Obama held a joint press conference in Washington, D.C., on energy development, environmental protection, and Arctic leadership.

On December 11, 2015, the new Arctic science cooperation arrangement between Canada and Sweden was announced by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, on behalf of the Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
