Aid Transparency

The Government of Canada is committed to increasing transparency and accountability. It regularly reports to Canadians on its international development plans, activities and results throughout the year. The former Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) was one of the first donor agencies to offer a project database online when the Project Browser was created in 2004. Global Affairs Canada scored 76.3%, in the 2016 Aid Transparency Index, placing it in the good category and 4^th among bilateral donor agencies. Its overall score has increased by over 30 percentage points since 2012.

The ranking is produced by Publish What You Fund for their annual Aid Transparency Index Report which examines various criteria, most importantly Global Affairs Canada’s publication of machine-readable data files compatible with the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) standard.

Since 2011, Canada has:

• launched an Open Data portal dedicated to international development information, also making the data available on opendata.gc.ca
• joined the Open Government Partnership
• joined the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI)
• supported the Open Data for Development initiative and the Open Aid Partnership
• released data sets compatible with the IATI Standard containing an increasing number of data fields
• published two ambitious IATI implementation schedules
• launched 42 web-based interactive maps of projects funded by the former CIDA
• added new fields to the International Development Project Browser including links to proactive disclosure reports continued to publish a wide range of annual statistical and results reports, as well as evaluations, audits and country strategies available on the Global Affairs Canada website
