Canada - Guinea Relations

Diplomatic Relations

Canada and Guinea established diplomatic relations in March 1962. Canada's bilateral relations with Guinea are based on a long tradition of cooperation in the mining sector and a common membership in La Francophonie.

The Embassy of Canada in Senegal ensures the representation of Canada in Guinea. Canada also has an Honorary Consul in the capital, Conakry, although it is currently temporarily closed.

Guinea has been represented in Canada by an Embassy in Ottawa since 1980 and is also represented by Honorary Consuls in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

There were approximately 500 Guinean students in Canada in 2015. 

Trade and Investments

Trade Relations

Canada and Guinea have an established trade relationship. In 2015, exports totaled more than 14.3 million, while imports from Guinea reached 58.6 million.

Trade Agreements

A Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) was signed on May 27, 2015.

Development and Humanitarian Assistance

  • In 2014–2015, Canada contributed 21.66 million in official development assistance to Guinea. This contributed to covering humanitarian needs linked to the Ebola outbreak and health needs in general.
  • The main Canadian partners involved in Guinea are the Canadian Red Cross, the International Development Research Center (IDRC), the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) and a consortium made up of World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the Center for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI).
  • The main multilateral partners are the World Food Programme and the World Health Organization.
  • The Embassy of Canada in Senegal also supports local initiatives to promote human rights , peace and security, and governance through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives.
  • Canada was one of the earliest responders to the Ebola crisis, and to date has committed more than $130 million to help address the health, humanitarian and security implications of the crisis in West Africa.
  • Canada is also making numerous in-kind contributions to efforts to end the Ebola outbreak, including support to the deployment of health experts and emergency response personnel to UN agencies in the affected countries; the donation and delivery of personal protective equipment to the WHO in West Africa; and, the donation of an experimental vaccine to the WHO. Based on an interim analysis of the vaccine during trials in Guinea, which indicated that it was effective in protecting people exposed to Ebola, the vaccine is now being officially used in West Africa.
  • In November 2014, Canada launched the “Join the Fight against Ebola” campaign, which led to the recruitment of seven Canadian healthcare workers and the deployment of 58 delegates through the Canadian Red Cross, to help manage existing Ebola Treatment Centres in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

Canadian Contribution to Peace and Security

Guinea supports Canadian efforts to reduce illegal migration since 2012 and benefits from capacity building to that effect.

Guinea signed the Paris Climate Change Agreement in April 2016.
