Infrastructure Canada delivers a broad range of infrastructure programs, providing flexible and effective funding support to provincial, territorial, municipal, private sector and not-for-profit infrastructure projects.
$120 Billion Infrastructure Plan: The Government of Canada is building strong, inclusive and sustainable communities by increasing infrastructure funding over the next ten years. The first phase includes new funding for public transit, social infrastructure and green infrastructure that aims to create economic growth, encourage social inclusion and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the coming months, we will work with provinces, territories, municipalities, Indigenous communities and other stakeholders to develop the second phase of the infrastructure plan.
The $53B 2014 New Building Canada Plan includes:
- The Community Improvement Fund, consisting of the Gas Tax Fund and the incremental Goods and Services Tax Rebate for Municipalities, will provide over $32 billion to municipalities for projects such as roads, public transit and recreational facilities, and other community infrastructure.
- A $14-billion 2014 New Building Canada Fund, which consists of the:
- $4-billion National Infrastructure Component (NIC) that will support projects of national significance; and
- $10-billion Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component (PTIC) for projects of national, regional and local significance. Of this amount, $1 billion is dedicated to projects in communities with a population of fewer than 100,000 residents.
- An additional $1.25 billion in funding for the P3 (Public-Private Partnerships) Canada Fund administered by PPP Canada For further information, please visit their website.
- $6 billion in funding continues to flow across the country this year and beyond under existing infrastructure programs.
Announced in Budget 2014, the National Recreational Trails Program provides $10 million to expand and improve multi-purpose trails for walking, running, cross-country skiing, biking, all-terrain vehicle use and snowmobiling throughout Canada.
Through the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan, Infrastructure Canada has supported about 6,400 projects.
The seven-year, $33 billion 2007 Building Canada plan will continue to run to 2014. As part of the Building Canada plan, Infrastructure Canada is contributing to projects through both the Building Canada Fund and the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund, which will continue to create jobs and result in long-term benefits for Canadians.
In addition to these ongoing initiatives, Infrastructure Canada manages other infrastructure programs, which are scheduled to wind down and no longer take new applications or project proposals.
