Creating a better future through biosphere stewardship, philanthropy and community building

The Clayoquot Biosphere Trust (CBT) is a registered charity based on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada. Established in 2000, CBT is the only organization in Canada that is both a community foundation and a UNESCO biosphere reserve. We pair this spirit of community with the power of a global presence to bring more people together for a shared understanding.

We are one of 1800 community foundations worldwide implementing United Nations’ goals to reduce poverty, end hunger, ensure quality education, and protect the environment. CBT also oversees the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Region, one of Canada’s 18 UNESCO biosphere reserves, and sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our team works to strengthen the development of all citizens, communities, and the ecosystems on which we all depend, for a future we can all be proud of. 

We acknowledge the territories of the Hesquiaht First Nation, Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations, Toquaht Nation, Ahousaht, and Yuułuiłath in the spirit of truth, healing, and reconciliation.

Community Gifts With Purpose

‘Tis the season for giving and in times like these, standing tall as a region. Which is why we're launching the CBT Holiday Giving Catalogue—a regional holiday fundraising initiative. The Giving Catalogue is an online crowdfunding campaign to support non-profit work in the west coast region. This collaboration spotlights the needs of the diverse range of organizations strengthening our communities and ecosystems, with 100% of donations directed towards the participating organizations. In short, everything starts with community. And through this united, public portal to support funding during challenging times, together we are stronger.

West Coast Nest

West Coast NEST (Nature. Education. Sustainability. Transformation.) is a regional education tourism collaboration led by the CBT along with communities, organizations, and businesses from Hesquiaht to Ucluelet, developed to expand local education opportunities, diversify the economy, and establish further employment opportunities.

Red dresses in the office window

If you walk by the CBT office at 316 Main Street later this week, you may notice the red dresses hanging in the front window. The simple and elegant dresses are adorned with black silhouetted feathers and bring awareness to the staggering amount of missing or murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) across Canada, but especially those from our community.
