After you apply: get next steps - renounce (give up) citizenship

Once we receive your application to renounce your Canadian citizenship, we will review it and begin processing. If your application is approved, you will be sent a renunciation certificate or confirmation of renunciation.

Some applications may take longer to process:

  • If documents or fees (if applicable) are missing, we will return your application to you.
  • If your case is complex, we may contact you to ask for more information or documents. Such cases may take longer to process.

Check the status of your application online. If the normal processing times have passed and you cannot check the status of your application online, you can send us an enquiry by using this Web form.

A citizenship officer may need to interview you:

If so, we will notify you by mail of the time and place of your interview.

  • If you live outside Canada, the Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate responsible for your area will contact you to let you know how the interview will be conducted.

You may withdraw your application. If you do, you may be eligible for a refund.
