Directory of Federal Real Property

The Directory of Federal Real Property is the central record and only complete listing of real property holdings of the Government of Canada. It is administered by the Real Property and Materiel Policy Directorate of the Treasury Board Secretariat. The purpose of the Directory is to maintain an up-to-date record of basic information concerning the real property holdings of the Government of Canada. Information held in the Directory is used to keep the Government of Canada informed about the scale and major components of its real property inventory. It is also used to provide information to ministers, members of Parliament and the general public concerning a specific property or group of properties within a particular geographic area.

The data dictionary describes a Parcel Element, which references some attributes and a link to the map image highlighting the property. Is there a source or location for the real property boundaries in the Parcel Element in some sort of geographic reference? A string of OpenGIS Well-Known Text describing the property polygon or a more organized XML structure would be useful. Thank you

Hello Todd, We received this response from the data owner. The actual open datasets of the Directory of Federal Real property was built to offer a maximum and a wide reuse of it in different domain. An export to GIS search about the properties will be available through the Directory of Federal Real Property application this fall once the application platforms have been updated. Thanks.

I've been using c# to read the DFRP Open Data XML file. Internally, in text, the file identifies as utf-16 encoding: But, the file is actually missing a BOM (U+FEFF) for utf-16. In fact, the file is encoded/saved as a UTF-8 file. Reading the xml file in its current form requires extra juggling in code because by specification the reading fails because of the automatic detection of UTF-8 and the header indication of utf-16. Can this be corrected? If the file is intended to be UTF-16, add the BOM. If it is intended to be UTF-8, remove the 'encoding="utf-16"' indication and just have Looking forward to a response (I can provide a contact email/number, as necessary).

To follow-up: the file has been changed to , not the recommended . I discovered the change while running my code (which failed). I will now investigate and correct. Thanks for the correction.

A previous comment refers a to-be-developed GIS export feature. Is this feature still planned? If not, is there an alternative to access the geo data, such as request from the data owner?

Hi Lerdman, We can provide a link to download publicly available geospatial data for the DFRP in a TAB file format, but we have a couple questions about exactly what you're looking for. Mind emailing us at open-ouvert@tbs-sct.gc.ca and we can arrange? As a side note, we're also working on making it more easily available through this site. Thank you, Kent on behalf of the open government team
