Sport events

The Government of Canada, through Sport Canada’s Hosting Program, provides funding to our country’s National Sport Organizations to support the hosting of over 60 international single sport events on home soil each year. To see the full list of events, please visit the Calendar of sport events.

These events allow our athletes to compete against the world’s best competition at home in front of enthusiastic Canadian fans.

At the same time, seeing our athletes at their best inspires all Canadians, especially our young people, to get active and to follow their own podium dreams.

And finally, in the case of major international Games and events like the Toronto 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015, the Government made significant investments in the construction or renovation of competition and training venues, leaving a legacy in the host communities for many, many years after the Games have ended.

Rio 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games

Sport Canada is also involved in international sport events such as the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016 by coordinating with government and sport partners as well as supporting the official federal government delegation that represents Canada at the Games.
