Judicial Stay in Terrorism Case

Vancouver – July 29, 2016 – The Supreme Court of British Columbia today stayed the proceedings against John Stuart Nuttall, 41, and Amanda Marie Korody, 33.

Last year, a jury found both guilty of conspiring to murder persons unknown, for the benefit of a terrorist group, contrary to s. 83.2 of the Criminal Code. They were also found guilty of making or having an explosive substance for the benefit of a terrorist group, contrary to s. 83.2.

The PPSC has filed a notice of appeal.

Consent has been given by the PPSC on behalf of the Attorney General of Canada to the laying of informations pursuant to s. 810.011(1) terrorism peace bonds.

PPSC Annual Report Tabled in Parliament

Ottawa – July 20, 2016 – The Director of Public Prosecutions, Brian Saunders, today announced the tabling in Parliament of the Public Prosecution Service of Canada Annual Report 2015-2016. The report covers the period from April 1, 2015, to March 31, 2016.

In 2015-2016, the PPSC worked on 72,538 files. This includes 41,661 files opened during the year and 30,877 carried over from previous years. While drug prosecutions continue to represent a significant proportion of its total caseload, the PPSC also conducted prosecutions in a number of areas including environmental, economic, immigration, and terrorism offences.

The report includes a section provided by Commissioner of Canada Elections (CCE), Yves Côté, on the operations of the CCE for the 2015-2016 period.

“The report highlights the significant work undertaken by PPSC employees, in various capacities and across all PPSC offices,” said Mr. Saunders. “I would like to thank all PPSC employees for their hard work and dedication throughout the year, which enable the organization to consistently deliver on its mandate. Throughout the year, PPSC employees exemplified our key values of respect, integrity, excellence, and leadership.”
